I tend to carry and use knives on the lower end of the price scale. I have one sebenza that has been carried and used, not babied, but I definitely am more aware of what I use it for when I carry it.
Many of my upper end users used to had for $100-$150 when I bought them, but they tend to go for $200-$250 now.

I don’t buy fancy, or exotic and definitely have a price ceiling, it takes a lot for me to even consider spending over $300 on a knife. But I wouldn’t buy any knife to be a safe queen, mostly interested in knives I can use, just not into the art stuff.

Quality knife prices sure have changed since I was a kid. My 66 Puma Skinner resides in my gun cabinet and been a queen since then. Guess I have a under $30 safe queen.

There is also the notion that we are custodians of these artifacts and should protect them for future generations.

Then there are those who abide by a waste not want not philosophy. Just because you have a dozen clean spoons in your kitchen, it doesn’t mean that you have to use all of them to eat a cup of ice cream.

I have one knife that I don't carry. It has been retired due to sentimental reasons. I carried and used it when I was in the US Navy from 1983-1987. My most expensive knife cost about $150 USD brand new. I use it quite frequently.

This thread has intrigued me.

I am very blessed (*beyond what I deserve) to own a buttload of "hard use" fixies, some of them VERY expensive and desirable/collectible. With that, I'm not sure that I've reached my "safe queen" point.

I liken my knives to some of the "high dollar"/"exceptional quality"/"franchise"/"trade" tools out there. For me, my expensive knives are still just simple "tools". They are meant to be used...and sometimes abused. In other words, I purchased them to USE 'em. Many of my fixies are the "Cornwell"/"Matco"/"Snap-on"/"Mac" tools of knives. I have absolutely nothing against "Collectors". However, in my reality, I'll be damned if I'm going to spend that much hard-earned money on any knife, and then not use it.

Just my $0.02. Carry on...

The IDEAL situation is 2 of each: backup in the safe, user in the pocket or hanging around the house. This is what I aspire to...but my aspirations are often far from feasible :D
