ATAX Available again at Hoods Woods

No, I cant find the one Im talking about. I know it was when a bunch of them went on a hike together. They used it to clean game and everything. I personally dont think I'd want the knife, but they did use it and it worked.

Looks like a gimmick to me.

Were this almost anyone else selling this, I would agree with you but I know Ron to be a good guy and frankly, he stakes his reputation on the performance of the tools he designs.

I wouldn't want one, its kinda like the tracker knife too me, jack of all trades, master of none but it is innovative.

He sure isn't having any trouble getting rid of them over at the Hoodlums forum.

To start off i would like to say that i think the design is a great one. But my Q is why it seems that everyone is trying to get one tool to do it all??? I can see the thinking around it. But for me i would like to have a knife in my belt and something larger in the pack. I know that a knife would make do or if i lose the knife i still have an axe. But if i lose the only tool i got............
If i had to take one tool to do it all it would be multitool.

i think the idea of this is a compact implement that will give you a survival tool in a small package, it fits easily on a belt and can be worn riding sitting in a car or snow machine or 4 wheeler,, piloting an aircraft or riding a horse with out digging into your leg, a few of these went to alaskan bush pilots as they could carry them on their person but have a sizable knife if they had to egress the plane suddenly. ron will tell you that a smaller blade would be nice to complement the atax, small fixed blades or folders, swak's come to mind. there are a lot of navigation and other tools built into the tool as well as a bearing for a fire bow.

i have had one of a while and it isfairly robust tool like most of the tops products, it holds its edge, and all in all is a good chopper for its size.

sasha, I am totally with you on this. I understand the appeal of credit-card knives and all manner of things, but I guess I just prefer to not over-engineer things. I carry 2 or 3 tools that each do their job very, very well, depending on the environment I'm in.

Even when out for dinner, I EDC a multi-tool and a stout folder in my pocket/on my belt. They don't dig into my body or get in the way. When hiking, camping, or flying over Alaska to go fishing/hunting (I wish! maybe next year...), I carry more and heavier-duty tools.

The ATAX is another attempt to make the 'ONE' tool. I'd much rather have a Leatherman Charge multitool and a Gransfors Bruks Wildlife Hatchet.

Looks like you can buy one tool which makes a sub-standard axe, knife, waffle iron but a truly excellent paper weight all in one.

I just don't see it but would be willing to be convinced.

What should you spend your money on ?Let's think ATAX for $199.95 or Scrapyard Knife Works Scrapper 6 for $99.95....... tough decision there !!!

Exactly, pitdog... for $200 you can outfit all your blade needs if you shop around a little. Purchases I made last summer:
CS Master Hunter......$50
CS TrailMaster*........125 *NOS, bought from a private party
CS Rifleman's hawk.....30

OK, I'm $5 over. But it can be done. And frankly, I'd rather have any one of those three than the ATAX thingy.

I don't think Mr. Hood with his ATAX or Mr. Beck (or credit WSK concept originator here) with his WSK intended to make a tool that can do it all, just a tool that can do more. Not to create a tool that will replace a hatchet, a saw, and a fixed balde, but to combine elements of several tools into on item. The ATAX and WSK designs push the envelope of usable knife design. Do we need one-piece edged tools that serve so many functions? Not really. But we don't need NASCAR, either. Or do we? :)

These guys were thinking outside the box and came up with something different. They have come up with a one-piece multitool. I don't believe the ATAX or WSK are intended to take over the knife world. They are just different tools. As with anything that is different, some will like them, many will not.

Hikeeba that point is well taken. It would be nice to hear from someone that has it what they think about it. I would rather have some on here tell me about it then read some testing some guy done. People on here are more get out there and do it.
I would pass on the NASCAR but would go more for the Rally. There is something about watching those cars take corners side way and going airborn at full speed. The realy cool part there is something for each of us. As long as you agree that my is better lol.

i have one and one of the best things is the portability of the blade, it carries easily on my belt, i can get into my truck, ride my 4 wheeler or horseback with it and it does not get in the way. with the attached improvised handle it makes a usable chopper, i do not feel under knived with this tool, a smaller blade folder or fixed is helpfull. there is a mini kit in the handle that is always with you.

i think that the convenience of the tool is one of it's best attributes, it is compact.

it is made by tops and so the steel and heat treat work well.

i like it for the size and capability that it has.

Agreed. I'm a Petter Solberg/Subaru fan myself. To bad Speed quit airing the WRC. I also follow F1 closely. NASCAR was mentioned because I believe everyone can relate to that. It was mentioned just to make a point.

Thank you Alex for your reviews of the tool. It sounds nice to me. If I have the $$ available at this time I'd pre-order one and give it a whirl.

Magneto i would never do anything like that.... Im just too nice of a guy *L^.
What i would do is tell my mom that you are being mean to me. So my mom would talk to your mom and your mom would tell your dad and your dad would hit you on the side of the head tell you to be nice to me. So you see im a nice kid, the best any mom would ever want even if my mom dont agree with it...

the problem with an individual tool is that some find it fits their particular needs and some dont, some like saws some like axes some like choppers, so beauty is in the eye of the beholder, carrying three pieces of hardware when i can get by with one less bulky tool is in my favor, most of my outdoor time is spent hunting so i have a rifle and a small knife, this allows me to take a capable chopper along also.

sometimes i take my knives of alaska brown bear combo it also gives me a compact chopper and blade. sometimes i take my hunters axe and a saw along depending on where and what i am hunting. so i guess you need to be flexible and try different things to see what your personal style is.
