Atlanta and Blade questions

So I still haven't bought my Blade tickets or hotel reservations. I need some questions answered first before the big purchase and whom better to ask than you guys?

  1. What time does the show start and end each day?
  2. Can I expect to never have to leave the show area?
  3. Anything worth seeing in Downtown Atlanta?
  4. Taxi/bus to the Cobb Galleria area, or rent a car and drive it myself?
  5. Is there still gonna be a musical performance? Rob? Microbevel?

Most of the questions are meant to gauge whether or not I need to rent a car and whether I should explore Atlanta or just hang out at Blade. I hate driving :grumpy: but if there's not gonna be anything to do for the first six or so hours of each day, I might consider it. From what I've read, there's a good deal of drinking every night, so I'm looking forward to that :)

Thanks

1. Noon on Friday to 5 (maybe6). 9 on Sat to 6, Sun 9 to 5 but things get kinda sparse around 1 P.M. or so.
2. No need.
3. Nothing worth seeing in Downtown Bastidville as far as I am concerned. (and I live there.) If I was coming to Blade for the first time or the 20th time, I would want to spend all my time at the show with friends. No one can see it all in three days, but if you get board with knives and knife folks you may want something else to do.
4. Depends on where you are staying. Most people who rent cars at blade use them to get there from the airport, the car sits all weekend and they use it to go back to the airport. A lot of motels provide shuttle services.
5. It will not come from me. (More pleasant to listen to a frog croak than listen to me sing.).
There are a gaggle of all types of places to eat, shop movies, mall etc within easy walking distance. I would rather have the car rental cash to spend on knives. YMMV.

The above are just my opinions after 20 + years of Blade attendance.

Thanks, Bastid. I was thinking just that. The car rental and parking fees probably add up to more than the cost of a taxi or bus to and from the airport.
I think I'll be hanging around the Galleria for 60 hours straight, then.

As for #5, I was referring to this :)

Hey Gus, good morning sir.

Gary, you just got it straight from the horses, er, Billy Goats mouth;)

I would suspect that one of the Hoggettes may soon offer up VIP tickets too if it wasnt already done so keep a look out:)

Since the Waverly is booked, wait until Jerry anncounces the "block rooms" at certain hotels for a Busse discount.

Tickets- Lexi will post a thread about VIP tickets so don't worry about that right now.

The Busse Booth is too damn fun to leave, so I doubt you will

Music- Haven't heard any the past 2 years, but I'm sure Skunk would sing if you ask him.

The Busse Crew always have something to do after the show, and it always results in drinking heavily.

Downtown Atlanta- Went to Blade for the past 2 years, never ventured outside of the Cobb/Waverly area. There's always something to do there.

... uh............ oops :( wish I'd read your post earlier since I just reserved my rooms about five minutes ago. Three nights at the Sheraton... the price is making me have buyer's remorse already. Maybe I should've done two nights at Hampton Inn or somewhere else.

So, what do I do, try to cancel the rooms and wait for the block room announcement? Are they guaranteed?

I would hold what you have til you get something else. Also, I am at the Sheraton and its an easy walk from Jock and Jills which is where most nights will end. Really not much if any further than walking all the way back to Waverly on opposite side of convention center. I would not worry with car either cause most likely you wont be legal to drive anywhere;):D.

I guess I'll see you there, T!

The aquarium is really cool.

I thought about going... aquariums in general are cool  maybe I can sneak out to visit it for a few hours one of those days.

It's something to see for sure. It's by far the best one I've ever been to. Also make sure to eat at the Varsity if you can make time.

Make a list of all the makers you really want to visit and when the location chart shows up online make notes. I have gotten home several times and realized I had missed a table or 2 that I really wanted to see.

I reco the hampton, esp the one a little farther away off cumberland (20 min walk to show). Much cheaper then the ones directly next to it.

Most of the restaurants close by are very knife friendly that weekend..

Easily. Cabs will run prolly about 60-75 each way (with a small but decent tip) from ATL-Hartsfield airport, maybe a tad more if gas prices jump. You can catch a hotel shuttle for a little less back to the airport. Car rental might cost the same per day, especially if you take the insurance. As for the rest, Gus is on it. :D

Oh...On the hotel thing. I'd hold those rooms you've already booked and wait to see about the Busse reserved blocks of rooms elsewhere. Check your cancellation policy at the Sheraton to be sure, but I think that it'll be something like 72 hours prior to stay for cancellation without penalty...but check to be sure. It is better to have options than NO ROOMS. ;)

Even one more option. Ride the Marta train from Hartsfield's main terminal to Lindberdh Station in Buckhead for 2.50. Catch a cab to the Waverly for 28.00.....

I had no idea you had to buy tickets. Was planning to go to my first show this year. Thanks for posting this thread.

Does this sell out??

No problems. Usually a couple of months before Blade, Busse and a lot of the makers and dealers on here will have VIP passes available. with a pass you get in line before the show and purchase a 3 day ticket or one day ticket if thats what you want for 5.00. A super deal. After purchasing that then you get in the line waiting at the door for the opening rush. It moves very fast and there always plenty of ambulances waiting close by for stragglers.LOL
