Hi Sal,

Now that the NYC show is over, could we have some details on the ATR concept and design?

Hi Carlos. Sorry you didn't get to the NY Show. Since production is still 6 months away, public photos are "kapu" (forbidden in Hawaiian, right Patti?)

I will give you some info. If you send me your mailing address (snail mail), I'll see if I can get you a pic (not for public showing yet).

Blade length - 3.5"
Blade steel - still to be determined, probably VG10.

Blade shape is unusual and quite difficult to describe. Basically a dagger grind with a chunk cut out of the top half, sharpened on edge side only.

Lock is an integral compression lock (first time)

Handle on the proto is Titan, although we'll probably make both steel and Titan handles (cost). Indexing holes in both the handle and clip (new style) for different size hands.

"Cobra hood" over hole for easy deployment (new concept).

14mm opening hole (Military size).

Very simple knife.

WOW! An integral compression lock!

Spyderco does it again.

This is the last time I will beg and plead for this, but as you continue to develop the knife could you see to trying a tip-up/down convertbile variant? I know that you prefer tip-down on your own designs, but I would like to own a "Sal Glesser Custom Collaboration" one of these days.

(By way of explanation: My entire collection is tip-up, and my "muscle memory" is hard-wired for drawing and clipping tip-up
knives.)

>>>addition:

Actually, such convertibility probably wouldn't work with indexing holes would it?

Anyway, it sounds like a great concept and I can't wait to see it. Thanks Sal.

Excellent, not only making the integral-lock Spyderco lusters happy, but considerably improving on the concept to boot. I'm there.

Ken

I can see that once the new locks and designs come on line, I'm gonna be regularly feeding money to the Spyderco altar! Sal, I gotta say, Spyderco seems to be doing the neatest things with knives nowadays. Good job.

Thanx for the kind words.

Carlos, this one is tip up. the Cobra hood interferes with the tip down draw. "form MUST follow function".

I'm not opposed to tip up...I designed the Endura and Delica tip up. I go back and forth in my carry pieces.

Sal, that is the best news I've heard since you told me about the G10 Lum Tantos.

(Sorry, I didn't mean to make it sound like you were "against" tip-up. But I've heard you say that you like tip-down on your bigger knives in order to utilize "the drop" technique. Next time I will ask rather than assume.)

You are certainly better at this than I, whenever I try a tip-down knife nowadays I always end up drawing it "backwards" and putting it away "backwards" as well.

Hi Carlos. habits. Where would we be without them? They are however difficult to dislodge or move.

Going back and forth from tip up to tip down, my hand has learned to "feel" the knife to determine which, but I still confuse at times.

The "Cobra Hood" really is neat so if all tests well, you'll see more tip up pieces with "hoods".

Dude ~ The ATR is by far : the most radical spydie I've seen. The effort really puts Spyderco ahead as a leading production knife manufacturer of the 21st century.
IMHO ~ The ATR is light, has a good feel with tactical advantages, very functional and rugged. Love the clip design which allows quick rotation for reverse grip and integral compression locking mechanism.

I bet more news of this high-tech spydie will be revealed as it nears production schedule!

I was at the NY Show, and got a chance to handle the proto. This knife is a mind blower. It deploys incredibly fast. I told Sal to make a million of them. The demand will be that great. Mark my words.

It's a winner- The "Cobra Hood" is such a simple & clever thing, it's a wonder that it hadn't been done before. I'm in for at least one when they're released. Sal, any thought to G-10 scales? (for grip)
Thanks!
Mike

Hi Rugger. Anything is possible, but then the lock won't be integral?

We'll need to see reaction to the piece before going "hog wild" with variations.

Carlos, you have to email me your mailing address.

Oops- Got me there Sal. Perhaps a little scale or two...
Also- What was that plastic prototype you had in your pocket? That thing was one of the best designs I'd seen in a while- excellent ergos & a super little utility shape. Patience is a virtue... I need to learn that...

Hi Sal,

I emailed you on Saturday. I sent another one just now. Let me know if it doesn't get there.

Merci.

Any idea when pics can be released? I am really curious as to what this knife looks like.
