Hi Dennis. The design was intended for general utility to handle any need or situation.
Basic design concepts would include:
A very simple highly functional folder that could serve a multitude of cutting chores.
For the blade:
I wanted a strong tip, but didn't want to go the "Tanto" route because they are IMO less "all around functional" than alternatives. The alternative that I chose was a dagger tip with the centerline of the blade being the thickest part of the blade, as opposed to the spine (as on most folders).
The trade off is in slicing, but I made the blade very wide and we can still get a nice blade/cutting angle and acceptable belly for skinning chores.
I cut a notch out of the top of the blade for forefinger indexing when the tip is being used for fine work. This combination made the blade shape more useful and kept the blade from looking very wide if the dagger theme was carried without the notch.
I selected 3.5" (89mm) because it is large enough for most chores (that would be performed by a large folder) and still legal in most areas.
3.5" for some reason appears much smaller than 4", so it is more readily accepted by Military personnel. Military personnel have to be very concious of the knives they carry so as not to appear "barbaric" to civilians.
The 14mm opening hole is more effective (albeit ungainly in appearance), especially wearing gloves.
The Cobra Hood is also a departure in that it provides an ergonomic lobe that can be narrower because part of the thumb drops into the hole allowing the tip of the thumb to more firmly index and grip the opening method.
For the handle:
The integral Compression Lock is simple and strong. Easily cleaned.
The shape is more ergo focused than appearance. the 50/50 (half blade half handle) choil also aids in control for close work. In my values, I believe control is more important than appearance.
I put enough expansion at the front and rear to prevent slipping either forward or backward (Like the Military Model) and tried to position the expansion to be able to fit any size hand.
Tip up is not only preferred by more people, but the Cobra Hood interferes with the "drop" opening. We're tring to design a clip that works both ways, but the design right now is tip up.
I plan the model in both titanium handle and steel handle. The Steel being the stronger and the titanium being the lighter.
The clip is a departure and includes indexing holes for a variety of hand sizes. These indexing holes are carried to the front side of the handle.
It is a very simple piece. there are more parts in some folding knife locks than all of the knife parts of the ATR combined. I have been working on the design for almost a year and we're still refining.
We'll have a prototype at the SHOT Show. Production is scheduled for Summer '01.
Hope that helps.
