Hi,
after a while, I'm thinking of getting me yet another Spydie(SE this time).. and once again I have questions;

Is ATR:s compression lock lefty-friendly? Do you push it in or out when you open the lock, to me it seems like you would push it outwards, so it won't be that lefty friendly. Second, what differend steels are the blades made off?
Thanks in advance..

PS; any pics of ATR:s next to; Dodo,Dragonfly, Tasman Salt, or Cricket would be appreciated :)

I have a Ti ATR and am left handed though I carry/use knives right handed. I personally don't find it easy to operate the compression lock left handed. To release the lock left handed I use my forefinger which results in pushing down on the lock bar instead of across, it can be done but it is not as easy as using my right fore finger. I love the knife and think is a great design.

The Ti version of the ATR has an S30V blade, the Ti version was discontinued but you can pick them up in the for sale section, I would like to buy another one. The stainless steel version has a VG10 blade, they are about the same weight due to all the holes in the SS handle.

Hope this helps.

I may be weird, but I find compression locks easier to operate left-handed than right-handed, and I'm right-handed.

I didn't have my Cricket handy, but here are a couple of crappy pics with my beat-up Dodo and FRN Dragonfly.

I am left handed, and find the compression lock on my my Yojimbo very easy to disengage with my thumb. I've never handled an ATR, but I imagine it would be similar.

Thanks Guys,
I've been trying to register to Spyderco Forum to ask more details, but I'll ask here then while I wait, Since many of You fellow spydernuts are here too anyway :)
What's the story behind ATR? I know it's "At The Ready", and it's designed by Mr. Sal Glesser Himself, but was it designed for utility, SD or both in mind to begin with? (For example, Civilian and Matriarch had a clear "need" or "reason" behind them.)

I haven't handled one in person yet, I'm going to get me one anyways in the near future ( just like any of my Spyderco's , never hold them in hand before purchased them, but still trusting they'll be just right for my needs:D ), but I would like to know a little about this designs history / idea behind it.

Disclaimer: I have no real knowledge of this subject :D

I believe it was designed mainly as a utility knife, with self defense secondary. Its thinness makes it more pocketable than it looks, especially for a knife this large. Sal knows the best knife in the world doesn't do you any good unless you have it with you when you need it, and this one is flat and light enough to keep At The Ready all the time.

Oh, by the way, the Cobra Hood works pretty good as a wave opener. I don't recommend in waistband carry, unless you don't mind replacing shirts frequently. Just a thought.

Nightdog if you are going to get an ATR then I highly recommend you just bite the bullet and go ahead and get a Titanium ATR. The Ti ATR in my opinion is just simply the "CAT'S MEOW". The slightly bulkier but lighter handle just handles so good and feels so comfortable.

I have made that recommendation to 2 very good knife collecting friends and both of them thanked me immensley for the advice. Now the Blade Steel is really not that great of a factor because the stainless ATR has VG-10 which is just simply great blade steel by almost anyone's standards. The Titanium model has S-30V and it is also a Golden Colorado made Spyder which is also a favorite of mine. I really have a place in my heart for GOLDEN CO Spyders. They are made well and they just look really classy. Plus I predict that even USER Titanium ATRs will even have collector value down the road.

Well good luck Sir :) Which ever ATR you decide on.

the Ti ATR is my very favorite spydie of all time, also Tac knives had an article about the ATR a few yrs ago and it was designed very much with SD in mind FWIW, it was gonna be marketed in conjunction with glock and glock backed out but it was good enough sal released it on its own.

the SS version is ok too, but i much prefer the Ti myself, both are great knives and carry very well.

Oh shoot. I'm changing my mind again... I'm still looking for a SE blade, but, I saw that Caly 3 and now I'm thinking of gettin one.
Tell me, am I going totally wrong way with this.. This would be my first SE. I think that ATR would be a little bit on the big side comparing to Caly, and Caly would be totally ambi, clipwise too, If I'm not mistaken by the pics I've seen?

dang this is difficult. Too many knives, too few pockets eh? :D
