ok, here it is, I was shopping fer a new pocket weight/box cutter. and I am torn.
Titanium Mirage, or a S-2. Both from CRKT, and both, I am sure nice, but one is ATS-34 and the other is ACUTO 440 ( have no clue about htat steel) and I was wondering. Which steel is better for a blade, and why?
Thanks

ok, please? I need help, I am not waanting to buy both,, ok ok ok, I DO WANT both, but I can only get one,, opinions? gee is the topic changeing?

Is ACUTO 440, CRKT's version of CPM 440V?

I know CRKT lists their steel composition at their website. Might want to compare it against Spyderco's CPM 440.

Just checked the mineral composition between the two, and -- aside from chromium content -- they do differ somewhat. The Rockwell hardness is also different with the ACUTO having a slightly higher rating.

Hm, Full Tang Clan, where did you find that information? To my knowledge, they are both equal on the HRC scale, 59-60. Specifications on ACUTO 440 are
Carbon: 0,90-0,95
Chromium: 17,00-18,00
Manganese: 0,50
Molybdenum: 1,30-1,50
Nickel: ---
Phosphorous: 0,04
Silicon: 0,50
Sulphur: 0,03
Vanadium: 0,10-0,25
--------------------------------------------
ATS 34
Carbon: 1,05
Chromium: 14,00
Manganese: 0,40
Molybdenum: 4,00
Nickel: ---
Phosphorous: 0,03
Silicon: 0,35
Sulphur: 0,02
Vanadium: ---

That´s it. IMHO no big differences between the two in normal usage.

dePaul,

Please note that I was comparing ACUTO 440, and CPM 440V. Not ATS-34.

I consulted ACUTO 440 stats at CRKT's website. They have a steel facts section.

I looked up CPM 440V at the Spyderco site.

However, I think you brought up a good point about ATS-34 and ACUTO 440 being equally able to handle tasks on a day-to-day basis.

I know that anything above ATS-34 is really overkill for me as I don't use my knives for hard cutting tasks. In fact, my knives for self-defense haven't cut anything yet (and hopefully won't if you know what I mean). They -- including a BM 710 -- still have their factory edge! Why I pre-ordered a Sifu in D-2, I'll never know. Just for the sake of having a 5.5 inch bladed knife in D-2 I guess.

Sorry, Full Tang Clan. You´re right, thought you compared to ATS 34, as you say. Well and I agree, ATS 34 will stand up to any tasks I put it to. . There are better steels according to edge holding, there are better steels according to rust resistance and so on...But IMO, it is the best compromise.
BTW, I just ordered a Spydie Mil. 440V, plain edge

Hey dePaul! I just ordered a Spyderco Military too!

I swore I wasn't going to buy anymore 3.5 - 4 inch bladed production folders in the $100 range unless they are significantly better, and innovative, than my Benchmade 710 Axis. Pretty tall order in my opinion.

Truth is, I used to not like Spyderco knives: too many lock-back models, and didn't like the "hole". In fact, the only Spyderco I own is the "Q" with web-motif blade/handle, and I only bought it as a novelty knife.

However, I'm going through a bit of a renaissance in that I have renewed my faith in liner-locks. I believe a well made liner-lock is safe even under hard use. In addition, I think Spyderco, CPM 440V, and the "hole" are killer! I mean, "da bomb!"

I´m sitting here and laughing Full Tang Clan. You´re right about that stuff about Sal. He is somewhat a "Guru" of the knife society

. I´ve been in touch with him, both here on BF but also on Spyderco´s forum. Very nice gentleman indeed, he is!! I loved his instructional VHS on the usage of the 204. He is so calm!
The Military, well. Let me say that I can hardly wait. Unfortunately as it seems, I´ll have to wait for some time

The guy at the local store said that the next delivery will be in something like 5-6 weeks!
I´ve always liked the spydie hole. Don´t know, maybe it depends on what knife you primary come in touch with and get used to. I´m not that fond of the thumb stud mostly because I only use my knives as tools and not for tactical reasons. I believe that the hole is far more practical than the stud. When I do some slicing, nothing get´s caught in the action, like it can happen using a knife with the stud. And IMO that the hole looks just much better
