I just sent for some ats34.
plan on plate quench, and have a even heat kiln.
need some of your advice on how and what to do with this new steel for me.
is it easy to drill , finish. you know just like a new-b.
thanks vern
If ou used to carbon steel the Stainless will seem a little harder to grind but not bad.Drills easy with cobalt bits just use steady pressure and lube. Finish blade to 80-90% before H/T andd you should be fine.

I use alot of ATS34 on my tactical knives. Good stuff. Makes a great knife. I send my ATS blades out for HT and cryo. Tends to grind a little harder than simple steels,no big differance. You'll like the results.
For one you won't see a lot of sparks spraying all over you. Did the opposite to SDS he had been grinding D2 and ATS AND I gave him some saw blade for a chopper. Boy did he get a surprise.
Ya finish to at least 90 % i just finished 3 knives that were 75 % and im cussin big time took a long time to finish. I had way to many deep scratches.
As your oven ramps up to 1950 put your blade in at 1800 this will give it plenty of pre soak time. Once at temp. hold for only about 15 to 20 min.. Remember your blade is a thin cross section and does not need the required 1 hr. per inch. soak time. After quench cool blade until it's cold to touch then put it in acetone and dry ice (-100F) for 2 hrs. Then warm to room temp. and temper 2x at 400 for 2 hrs each.
