ATS-55, a question or two.

I recently put my hobby to fiscal gain.

I now work at a retail knife store.

And at this store, my co-worker keeps telling people that ATS-55 is harder to sharpen than ATS-34, due to a higher Rockwell C scale rating.

Is this true?

Which Spyderco models are made in America?

Are the new Moran sheaths available for old Morans?

I have knives made out of both materials and I find that I can sharpen ATS-55 blades a lot faster. The Spyderco ATS-55 blades are 'scary sharp out of the box'. It takes me longer to sharpen the ATS-34 and I haven't been able to get the 'scary sharp' using my Gatco (like Lansky) guided system.

the rockwell c rating is not always indicitave of how difficult a particular steel is to sharpen. here at the shop, i've found ats-55 very easy to sharpen, even easier than cpm440v (which is rockwelled 2-3 points lower). what makes one steel more difficult to sharpen vs. another has to due with each steel's overall metalurgical content, the method by which you sharpen the steel, & your personal sharpening technique. using our 204 sharpmakers (the stones of which have a rating above 9 on Moh's hardness scale), i've yet to see a steel that i can't get into that 'scary sharp' realm. regarding technique, before i learned to use our 203& 204 sharpmaker i could have rolled an edge with the best of them (thanks, sal for the lesson). sal can also provide much more insight to metalurgy side of your question than i can, but i hope this helps. regarding the knives we make here in golden: native (c41pbk, c41psbk, & "blue"), military (c36), starmate (c55), & frank centofante/jr (c50 & c25). regarding new sheathes for old morans (yea, i'd love one too), i hope so-this is another ? best answered by sal or danelle.
