I take it down to the thickness of a dime before HT. But I am no expert though.

Um being that 10 mm is bigger than the 1/8th stock you started with you may want to rephrase that. but I'd say some where around 1/32-3/64.

I agree on the .020, maybe .025. ATS34 hand finishes just fine after heat treat. It just takes a little patience.

From 220 grit, take a piece of 220 wet/dry paper, fold it in half and clamp to a flat surface. My wood bansaw has a cast iron table so that's what I use. I also usually finish to 400 before heat treat, then start with 320 wet/dry.

Shoot some WD40 on the paper and start with long, even strokes. It takes me about 1 sheet per grit. Go to the next grit and repeat. You can really get your shoulders into it, so it goes fast. How far past 600 or 800 you go depends on the knife, whether it is a user or more.

ATS34 is nothing to be afraid of. Send it to Paul Bos or some other professional for heat treat.

Now get busy on it. You won't regret it.
