ATS34 Steel Heart Thread

Is that a real one??????

.

The answer I got via email:

Dave,

That's the real deal!

We used to chemical etch the blades and that mark is fairly typical.

It looks awesome!

Congrats on such a great score!!!

Jerry or anybody who knows: Is this the knife that takes EIGHTY hours of thermal cycles (heat treating) to produce to Busse Combat standards? The value of that alone makes that an awesome score. The secrets I would love to know ;)

Too cool! Nice find Dave!

I don't think I've ever seen one in such virgin condition like that one:eek:

So the BBSHSH came in ATS 34, and A2 ??????

thanks oldtimers:)

Geesh Dave.....you freaking HOG....errr piglet.

If you get a chance could you take some shots of the spine? Top, Tip, Butt, and belly. I mostly interested in the tip and how it compares to the LEASH1's tip. If I'm not mistaken the original ATS34 Steel Heart was done in 0.25" thickness.

Congrats on a mighty fine score bro. Great knife....going to be an user?:p

The original Steel Heart I was ATS 34. The Bird's Beak knife you picture is a Steel Heart II, which was A2 and is slightly longer in the blade than the SH I.

Later on, the non-BB Straight Handle Steel Heart came to be referred to, incorrectly, as the Steel Heart II, and over time this has become common practice.

Mike,

I think of them as:
1) SH-1 (ATS-34) 2 smooth bolt fasteners 6.5 inch blade
2) BBSHSH (A2) 3 smooth bolt fasteners 7.5 inch blade
3) SHSH with half moon pommel(A2 or INFI) 3 smooth or slotted bolts, or tube fasteners

And then there is always the different handle slabs to further define them

1) Smooth
2) Partially vertically grooved (between fasteners)
3) Fully vertically grooved
4) Diagonal grooved

There are two general varities of the BBSHSH, one has what is refered to as a "Hump" back and the other is more straight, the "Hump" being older. The time line goes from left to right. The plunge line also changes from an arc to more straight over time. There are probably endless varities of all of them.
