Attack of the Dragon

Something small and light so it won't get in my way or weigh me down as I'm running up the nearest tree!

From someone on the same side of the world, a good machete-length blade for bushwork and camp.

Oh, about those dragons? Nasty creatures and could outrun a man I believe! I REALLY don't want to be fighting one. In the off-chance that I do, I'd want to be armed with: bullwhip or .45 pistol!

I don't know how Komodo dragons hunt but I saw a couple of them in the zoo recently and their eyes are very intelligent. Intelligent predators usually don't warn you before they attack - so I think a weapon in your hand is better than one in your sheath. Take a large sturdy walking staff. It'll already be in your hands when you need it.

As far as a knife, I'd actually take a sharpened spike of some kind or a very narrow dagger like a Fairbairn-Sykes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairbairn-Sykes_fighting_knife. I don't know how tough their skin is but a slicing cut or chop may not penetrate it. A sharpened spike or narrow dagger is more likely to create sufficiently lethal puncture wounds.

if you were close enough to use a knife on a dragon your goose is cooked anyway, if they are close enough to bite you and do so most victims die from a massive infection in a very short amount of time they can also whip thier tails with enough force to knock a deer to the ground perhaps a long sharpened pole or a fire (if allowed would be better for defense) as far as blades go i'd bring my usual bush blades fallkniven f1 ontario 12 inch machete and vic sak fieldmaster..they are islands if I was going to be playing in the water alot imight bring a spyderco salt as well

It sounds like this was a fairly unusual occurrence. You probably don't have to worry too much, but as has been mentioned, a good stout walking stick possibly with a sharpened end would probably be a handy defense, just in case.

Man these things truely are nasty creatures. I've read that they rarely attack full grown adults, but have been know to willingly attack children. But that said, even if one wern't to attack to kill, but merely to defend it's territory (I understand that they are VERY territorial), it would be a scary situation. The Komodo Dragon's mouth is so full of bacteria and infection, that a single bite can be deadly as the wound almost invariably becomes infected and the victim dies. This allows the dragon to come back and dine after the victim has started to decompose, which is how this reptile likes it's food.

If I thought I might encounter one without a firearm, I'd probably rather have a fire axe than a blade, but that isn't really all that practical. I guess I'd want to have a large heavy bladed khukri.

I've never come across one but I imagine they're not too different from our goanna (they're probably the same family) so I'd bet they can climb trees far better than you and me.

I think the suggestion of a walking staff to be the best one as you want it as far away as possible.

Thank you for the comments...

I will be SCUBA diving in the area but will swing by the Komodo Island and come to shore to check them out. There are also other islands in the area with Komodo Dragons.

I have no plan to venture to the forests so I was just going to bring a small knife in addition to our dive gears, to keep the equipment to the minimum. However, after seeing the news and your comments, perhaps it's a good idea to bring something that can maintain distance to the dragon should the occasion arise. I'll have a bamboo cane made with a sharp metal tip just in case. And a large and strong blade is probably a good idea, Busse Fusion Battle Mistress as suggested...

I won't have to run fast. I'll just need to run faster than the slowest guy... :D

Carry a midget that you can throw to the dragon to distract him so you can run.

To be fully prepared take an ax so if he grabs one of your limbs you can chop it off to get away.

immature koodos are good climbers however the adult ones cannot climb thier bulk is to great for thier claws to support it, however they are excellent swimmers and do swim from island to island..so even when diving yuoumight glance one swimming above you on the surface...that'd be a cool sight but I dont think they can dive or hunt underwater so either way you'll be safe.

I am glad the big ones can't climb. I am also told it's OK to swim near them in the sea as they are not aggresive at all in the water. Thanks for your comments...

I believe the Halberd would be the perfect anti dragon weapon.

I was thinking light saber. They'd be a LOT more endangered if they lived here. Nasty creatures, got no love for them.
