Well, i got sent home today cause i had a pocket knife with me. I was cleaning my spyderco chinese folder when the manager walked by and saw it, she called me into her office and asked what i was doing with the knife (i was thinking why i need to have a reason to have a knife?) i didn't give a reason and couldn't really say anything cause it was obvious she wouldn't understand and she only saw knives as weapons, she went on to say in the situation thing are today (i inferred she was talking about the 9/11 ordeal) i shouldn't be carrying a knife blah blah blah, i said i can just put the knife in my car but she said "no, i really feel uncomfortable with that knife around so you should just go home now" im thinking uh... ok, whatevers. The company is way backlogged right now and is requiring mandatory overtime from everyone AND they want people to come in saturday morning to work, YET she sends me home 6 hours early just cause i had a KNIFE. well apparently people see things differently. Hell i always carry two knives to work and have been doing so for months and then all of a sudden this happens? and it was a spyderco chinese folder with blue handle! how can someone be scared of such a nice looking knife! imagine i had my eki commander out! oh well, now i have more time to read the post on BFC!

The funny thing is they probably have a few pencils, pens, may be a kitchen knife in the break room, various hand tools, etc.... that could be just as dangerous, may be more.

Oh well, some people:rolleyes:. I hope they don't give you anymore crap, over something like this.

:D:).

Ask for preexisting written rules, stating that knives are not allowed on the premises. When she can't produce the paperwork to back up her actions, demand your six hours of pay.

Actually that is exactly why you should be carrying a knife.

I would have to also ask for the company's written policy.

well im pretty sure remembering that knives weren't allowed on the premises... but i never gave it much thought. not sure about this one, imo if it's legal to carry by state law why can't i carry it in my company, but rules are rules i guess, i just find this who thing comical.

Thats to bad.
I'm glad I do not work in such a place or around that type of person.

Would you like to let us know what the name of this company is?

Maybe you should go talk to the managers boss.

Work is one place I look forward to taking my knives. I get to use my knives alot at work.

I'm not supposed to have a knife with a blade longer than 3" at work or any "weapons" in my car (the employee manual subjects me and my car to weapons searches). All that said, there's a 7" or 8" butcher knife in the lunch room anyone could grab if they went postal.

I don't understand these rules. If a person has decided to take someone else out at work, they're WAY beyoned paying attention to what's written in the employee manual.

No point in talking to the managers boss then :(

well i was probably wrong in the first place cause i was going against company policy, but to me its not that big of a deal and i never really thought about whether it was allowed or not at work i just did without giving it a second thought, i was just surprised that she made such a big deal about it, guess whats not a big deal to me is a big deal to others

Sounds like Earthlink.

I got fired from Earthlink for making a joke about going postal. I say "joke" because we were all laughing and it wasnt the maniacal evil sort of laughter that actuall homicidal maniacs make. They sent me home for making threatening comments and told me to return for work the next day. Aparently my ex-Recon Marine supervisor was afraid I was going to kill him, and I was escorted out by several secuirty. Upon my return I was handcuffed and searched by the Pasadena police. After a short period of questioning the cops realized I was making a joke and set me free to be immeadiatly fired by an Earthlink executive. They told me I was not to enter the premesis and that there would be no more activity on the subject. A few months later I was sepinaed to go to court to face criminal charges for Terrorist threats. I easily had it reduce to disturbing the peace and only had to pay a small court fine and thousands in lawyer fees. The nice part about it is that it forced me to start up my art career and I am waaayy better off then doing tech support in a heartless cubial farm. I am still great freinds with my former coworkers at Earthlink and have become somewhat of a myth and legend to the people who were hired after my decent. This was long before 9-11 I can imagine I would be in a serious werld-o-shite nowadays. But I limit my violent sense of humor to those who are mature enough to understand it and not be frightened of me.

You mantioned you were in the LA area...hope it isnt Earthlink you work for. In any case, calm resolve in the face of ridiculous stupdity will perservere in this situation.

Sounds like your Bosslady is a massive blithering idiot with her panties in too-tight of a knot.
I myself would just nod agreement and go home, play with my knives :)and enjoy the day off :D (and being far away from that kind of ultra-PC babble-thought--forget trying to reason with those kind of people because there is no way to logically)then the next day start looking for a better place to work at than where you were.

f**k me

if you will pardon my language but im totally shocked.

the other the guy i sit next to at work was struggling to get into a parcel taped up with packing tape I had half a mind to give him a hand with my fallkniven mod p but I thought 'hmm maybe best not to i dont know what the response would be' Im really glad I kept my knife firmly in my pocket now, but the point is it was to someone elses loss, I had to watch him try and get into a large box covered in about a roll of packing tape using only my leatherman micra which took him about 50 times longer.

you are right, anyone wanting to do someone serious damage at work would be alot better off beating them with a chair or taking a knife from the canteen or something rather than going crazy with a small pocket knife but it just goes to show the pathetic mindset of the majority of people.

you say you worked in tech support...didnt you say you needed the knife to do your job, opening parcels, stripping wires etc?

That sucks, and its another example of a phenomenon I have never beennable to figure out. People you deal with regularly or even just met act completely normal around you. They don't find you threatening, they may even think your a hell of a guy. Then 3 months later they notice the clip on your pocket or see you opening a box. Suddenly they do everything they can to keep from putting you on the offensive, and act like their trying to talk a down a hostage situation

"OH MY GOD WHAT IS THAT?" "I MEAN, WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH THAT?"
"JUST PUT IT ON THE TABLE AND WE CAN TALK THIS THROUGH" "THAT KNIFE MAKES ME FEEL VERY UNCOMFORTABLE"
"THE THOUGHT OF AN INANIMATE OBJECT, THAT COULD POSSIBLY BE USED AS A WEAPON, IN THE HANDS OF SOMEONE WHO HAS NEVER ACTED IN A THREATENING MANNER TOWARDS ME OR ANYONE IN MY PRESENCE, AND SEEMS TO BE USING IT IN A RESPONSIBLE MANNER FOR SOMETHING CONSTRUCTIVE, IS TOO MUCH." "I CAN'T WORK WITH THAT HERE, I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH IT IN THE SAME BUILDING AS ME, THERE WERE ALREADY 3047 POTENTIAL WEAPONS IN THE BUILDING, 3048 PUTS ME OVER THE EDGE." "I MAY HAVE TO SEEK COUNSELING"

Why does this happen? Seemingly rational people fall to peices at something absolutely harmless. And you can't talk them out of it you can't explain it to them. They act like complete morons when five minutes before they seemed like a normal person with a good head on their shoulders.

Get jobs in Law enforcment, I carry all kinds of knives to work and no one cares :). A couple of years ago I worked in one of our schoold for a term, and one day one of the teachers comes to me and says "billy XXXX is drawing pictures of guns and knives in his notebook, can we charge him or something, because he is dangerous". I look at her with a are you nuts look, and say Ill go talk to him, well I talk to him and find that Billy XXXX is just a kid (about 14) who likes hunting with his dad, fishing etc. and I look at the pictures hes drawing and they are of rifles and some fixed blade knives, nothing wierd about them he's not drawing pictures of murders or killingsor nothing, just of his dads stuff that he likes. I go back tell the teacher theres nothing wrong with Billy XXXX just a normal kid, well she wants him charged, but I just tell her that hes not doing anything illegal to charge him with. People are just wierd about stuff these days, I mean this area where I live is in the country, half the high school boys have gun mounts in thier pickup trucks, and she complains about something silly.

I remember when that happened and i also remember what you said wasn't just something that could be taken as a joke. Funny thing there is always 2 sides to a story. Hey I am a big gun nut and a slightly bitter ex-grunt but I know better than to talk about guns and "going postal" around here. Im sure that goes for all places of employment. Think before you speak and you may keep your job.

Sorry for the work problems. It really sucks and is unfair. You can bring your deadly shoe laces to work to garrote your coworkers, why not a "little" pocket knife ("little" is defined by your hand size :) )?

I have no problems carrying knives to work. Heck, I think I'd get sent home if I didn't carry one (or more)! ;) You should see the number of knives I have scattered around my desk. :D

If you had at your desk what I have at my desk, they'd probably call the cops on you! ;)

That's why I'll probably try to turn the Canadian Criminal Code around so that I could keep my pocket knives in my pocket instead of clipped to the pocket.
I think this is just ridiculous.....
I think if the state laws says fine, the company rules shouldn't be able to limit your freedom.

I am pretty lucky at my job. I work for a small state University and like most universities, there are no "weapons" allowed on campus. But I carry at least one knife on me every day and even use it in front of the professors. The thing is that I know all of the faculty and staff personally and have worked with them for about four years now so they know me pretty well and trust me. Also, I always use it in a manner that shows how useful a knife could be. For example, they ask me to change their printer toner cartridge and I use my knife to open that annoying packaging that they put it in before they even have time to reach for the scissors. I also use it only in front of people I trust not to "freak." Of course it doesn't hurt that if they lose me for any reason then the school would be severely messed up since they could never afford to hire a replacement--anyone who is knowledgeable enough to do my job is not stupid enough to work for what they pay me and they know this so they are pretty tolerant of me (not that I take advantage of that or anything... ). I generally use my little Chive for things at work (even though I carry more/bigger things)--imagine if I took my bali out  .

Anyway, what happened to you pretty much sucks, but you should always be prepared for questions like "what do you need a knife for" if a supervisor asks you (if you actually care). And you should get a copy of a written policy on the subject for future reference--hell, maybe it was just one of those rules that someone made up and is not actually a rule. Later.
