Attempted sharpening with rod - ended up dulling the knife completely

P.S. I saw a video, posted by a member here, where someone used a piece of concrete and a coffee cut to sharpen a knife. Worked great IIRC. Anybody have a link?
 
A dead-smooth (polished) rod may not remove much if any steel, and those ones may be better for just re-aligning an edge, while minimizing metal removal.

I agree that a polished steel works much better for Honing/realining your edges. I polish those toothy german butchers steel to a 600 grit polish for my customers all the time.
