Attempting to make scales fit for a "king"

Beautiful job, Acer. I like scales that area bit thicker than the factory ones for the big chopping Beckers. Yours look just about perfect.

Thanks again to everyone for the positive comments.
I found the chisel blade for the X-acto, and it was exactly the right size.

(sorry for the lousy cell phone pics)

So I cut the slots for the nuts.
It still needs to be cleaned up a bit, but you get the idea.

Shown with both halves bolted together.

I'll be off to the hardware store soon for stainless hardware.

Still a little light sanding to do, then time to stain.

Cutting out the holes for the nuts was the hardest part for me when I made scales for my 9, took it nice and slow and got there in the end. You did a great job!

I use a sharpened screwdriver. I cut the holes after I get the rough shape cut from the wood. No sense in me doing all that work and then screw up the holes.
Your's look awesome, very clean well shaped hex holes. Better than mine with the screwdriver. Maybe I'll have to try that X-Acto chisel point tip.

Sweet scales man! I spent some of my weekend making some micarta ones for my 9 too...

How many scales have you made? Those look really professional .

Thanks everyone!

This is my 4th set of scales of any type.
I made a wood set for my 11, followed by a G10 set also for the 11.
Then a G10 set for my ESEE-4.
This is my 1st full size Becker set though.

Very nice work. Looks like they were made by a professional woodworker.
Thank you.
For years I actually made my living as a woodworker.
My father was also a woodworker and I recently inherited his machinery.
So I suppose that gives me a big advantage.

I test fit the scales one more time........................................

.......................then stained them.

I'm not sure if I made the right color choice, but it's too late to turn back now.
The color and grain looks much better in person though. It looks a bit uneven on camera though.

Next I'll apply some boiled linseed, or mineral oil. That should give it a little shine.

Looking GREAT!!! I'll bet they will darken/even up with some oil applied.

I am pretty partial to Watco Danish furniture oil. Its slow to work with but well worth it in the end.

Those look amazing darkened and on the knife. Thanks for the update. Wood scales are growing on me. I just question how tough they are compared to grivory and G10/Micarta. I beat on my knives pretty hard...

Wow, amazing job. I love how you made the slots for the hex nuts. Great work, congrats.
