Hello,

i'm attending a one day forging class this weekend. On the first half of the day i will be taught some basics of forging. On the second half i have the opportunity to forge something to my desire. But i'm not quite sure of what i want to forge.

Do you have any suggestions of something cool and usefull to forge? My knowledge of forging is only theoretical, since i'm an engineer.
I don't think i want to forge a knive, since it's good to look for new horizons.

Since you will have minimal skills and only a few hours, go for something utilitarian. A forged and twisted coat hook, a fireplace poker, a fancy pot hanger for the wall or outdoors, a door pull handle for the tool shed, etc.

I was about 10 years old my father teaching me to make nails.
Actually making the tools to make nails might be a good starter project.
Chisels & punches are also good starter project tools.
Requires basic forming & heat treating.

Depending on the skills they are going to cover, a bottle opener is a neat option.

Bottle openers are fun to make. You use a punch and hammer skills. Another choice is a forged leaf. Maybe a little harder but cool.

Tongs

Wolf jaw type

Learning to make and modify tongs would be useful forever.
Tongs are useful but while you are in a class I'd take on a project that requires more skills which you can use to make tongs (and other things) later on down the road. Something like leaves can teach you really good chisel and hammer technique while giving you a feel for how metal will spread out and move under the hammer.

Your instructor has a whole folder of ideas- If I were you I'd ask what would be a satisfying project that stretches your skills but isn't way beyond them.
