Attention deer hunters

NapalmCheese, Who made the Leuku? John

It's a Lauri blade I picked up from Ragweed, I just put a handle on it and built the scabbard. I used some black walnut firewood (heart and sap wood) and a 300 win mag case head to make the handle, then made the scabbard out of (I think) some very plain maple. I originally stained the scabbard purple but didn't care for it and sanded it back leaving that interesting pattern highlighting the grain on the flat of the scabbard (and leaving the purple on the edges). The bolster is hammered aluminum.

*Edited to note that I didn't realize we were talking fixed blades. I personally use a folder for deer hunting.

Found out the hard way that a Spyderco Manix 2 makes a poor gutting/cleaning knife. The S100V is also a poor choice as it’s not tough enough. I chipped the hell out if the blade when I cut into bone. I easily sharpened out the chips, but that will get old after every use.IMG_7152.jpegIMG_7151.jpegIMG_7209.jpeg

My new choice is this Spyderco Shaman S90V. Hopefully it’s tough enough.

I’ve used a Buck 110 since 1989 and lost count of how many deer and other critters I’ve field dressed and skinned. I did start using a Buck 192 vanguard for skinning about 10 years ago for a better grip and less hand fatigue. I prefer a 4” and under blade for a hunting knife, it’s really all I’ve needed. Larger blades seem to cumbersome and my wrists get fatigue.

You did a nice job! John

Grohmann No1, the smaller knife on the right. The design is flawless, the steel is good enough to quarter a moose without any touchups. To me the 4" blade feels just a touch long when dressing a deer, and a tad short when breaking down a moose or elk, so probably about as good of a compromise as I'll find. Been using it for about 15 years, at this point anything else just feels crude and clumsy.

I have never used a better deer knife than this MKC 'Blackfoot.' The size and blade shape are perfect, imo (3-1/2" blade).
Field dressed a whole whitetail with just this knife last Fall (I'll spare the bloody pics):

Post-hunt, with the gore wiped off, but no touch-ups to the edge at all, and it was still cleanly slicing paper:

Ive been trying to get one of their whitetail models since they first came out. But its near impossible since im in Europe.

I use a customized Spyderco Shaman in S90V and blaze orange scales.

It will cut for days.

That's a nice setup. The orange scales are useful for sure.

I use what I have on me. Which happens to be an endela in k390. I just swirl it around in the creek after getting and then hit the pivot with some silicone sprat when I get home. It's no worse for wear.
