Fortunately we are not bound to any standards of pricing for custom knives. A Maker can ask a trillion dollars for his wares if he so chooses.

If you have a problem with how much a maker is asking for his knives, just walk away. It's that simple.

P.S The rules for the xchange may also be found in this link as per the owner of the forum

I fully agree!! Just go to any major knife show, Guild, Blade, Solvang, whatever, then you will appreciate the For Sale forum!!!

Dang, I gotta finish another knife, cause the next one that goes up for sale here.... Price: $1,000,000,000,000.00.

I'll probably drop the price after a few days if it doesn't sell.:D

PS Ok, the above was obviously tongue-in-cheek. On a serious note, however, this is a topic that kind of interests me.

On the one hand, clearly it's no good to have a maker post a knife for sale, and have his For Sale thread immediately devolve into an ugly little fight about what his stuff is worth, overcharging, and then to have the name-calling start, etc. That's no good.

On the other hand, a little feedback on pricing I don't think is necessarily bad. I mean, say I offer a knife on BFC, and I ask $500 on it. If a couple people pop in and tell me, "You know, you're not famous, and there's another guy next door who's ALSO not famous, selling pretty much the same knife you are for $250.00." then they have just given me some useful information about the market in which I'm trying to sell my product.

Maybe I tell him "That's fine, but the price on this one is still $500", or maybe I tell him "Ok, I'll give you this one for $245"- but either way, I know more than I did before, and that's a good thing.

This is a tricky subject, so I'm just trying to draw attention to the fact that there are two sides to it.

At the same time, I did read the thread that I THINK prompted this thread. I agree that giving a maker a bunch of grief is no good. But still, sometimes some feedback, some appropriately phrased feedback, can be good.

Edit to add: Now, whether or not Knifemakers' For Sale is the place where that feedback belongs is a matter of forum rules, and that's probably just something for mods to decide.

Well said. Also, if it doesn't sell at that price, the maker will draw some info from that as well.

I think that some feedback needs to be given privately. When I've had problems, I've sent e-mail and PMs. All the men I've dealt with have been very honourable, and always made things right. I haven't felt the need to make public comments about these problems. If I did feel that need, I'd take it to the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

With that said, I hope that private feedback does help people make refinements to their products and perhaps their pricing.

An old man once told me that "difference of opinion is what makes poor land sell and ugly women marry". Because of their beauty and uniqueness, I only buy customs. I consider them to be the perfect example of folk art, and they should be valued as such. If anyone has a comment regarding the price of a blade here, it should be by email or pmail only. Of course, this is only my opinion, and should be taken as such. Thank you, custom makers, for your wonderful work. Bill

If a buyer wants to discuss/debate price it should be done by PM or Email, not in the makers for sale thread.

Why? I don't have an opinion on this really, just curious why you feel the way you do.

Andy

When you haggle over a car price on a dealership lot, do you talk to the salesperson face to face, or hold up your offers on a banner from across the street?

A for sale thread here in the makers section, is a market place that they paid for to offer their knives, not for someone to in a sense publically tell them their knives are not worth thier price.

As the mod' said. " If you have a problem with how much a maker is asking for his knives, just walk away. It's that simple."

That's why you're the moderator Mark! You said it so much better than I would have. I typed "Stop being a Jackass in someone's else's For Sale Thread" and a few other versions, but ultimately decided that most BF members would see Jackassery as just that!

I would speak to the salesperson face-to-face. In a public place. Here, if either party isn't comfortable with that, then they can take it to email if they wish. So long as everybody stays business like and polite, why should anybody care where business is conducted?

It is just business, after all.

I don't at all see that politely discussing price is anything like telling a maker that "their knives are not worth thier price". To me, it's just business and shouldn't be taken as any kind of insult. It's not a dirty process, so why hide it? They paid to advertise, but they want my business/money. I think that gives me a stake to some degree, at least.

In any event, if this is a forum rule, then put it in the rules so someone can read it before they make a public faux pas. Don't keep it a secret rule and jump on people when they don't know about it.

Wanted to add, I don't care which way it goes, I'll follow the rules if they are clear. That's all I have to say.

Andy

It is.

All negative feedback must be restrained to The Good, The Bad & The Ugly.
Do not make negative comments in someone's for sale thread, you will be penalized....SPARK

No problem, it's in the rules for the main exhcange section.

OK, very good, I appreciate the help.

Now I have a humble suggestion to the Mods. Please make a note at the head of THIS forum indicating this particular rule. I had no idea it existed as I have never visited the Main Exchange section. Now that the Makers have their own section of the forum, it would be perhaps a good idea to include this very important piece of information here.

This would do wonders to avoid such problems in the future.

Thank you!

Andy
