At this household we eat, breathe, live knifemaking 365 days a year. I can look if I want to or I'm telling my mom. Hey Mr. Collucci!!! Got to love him ;) Cavelady

Okay, I'm the only one here now... Where'd everybody go? LOL!!!

Hello folks,

Some of you know me from the Northwest Area (Hey Matt!!) and the local shows out this way. I'm a collector, but Nick W. "made" me pound out a small stick tang blade when I visited him one Saturday to pick a piece he was finishing for me... He says I should finish it and make my first knife! I laffed - I use it now to show people who aren't knifeknutts what all my forged collectibles look like before they become works of art! :D

It actually helps to get some of the more skeptical ones to appreciate what it is I am interested in.

And yes, I lurk here - not being a maker, but a collector/user, I find some of y'alls' verbal interchange to be illuminating - I've learned things simply by reading what y'all do, and reading the answers given so freely to people who may be total strangers, linked only by an affection for the Blade...

In advance, I just want to thank you folks for making my pursuit of knife collecting so enjoyable!

linked only by an affection for the Blade...

I think it's a little more than that Joe. Knife makers and Gun Builders and nearly all people who create with their hands, are linked by a certain mindset and at least the desire for a certain lifestyle.

We may well be among the last truly free people in this country.

Look at this way. Many people see something and ask how much it is.

We look at the same thing and ask ourselves, how can I make that and How can I improve it.

Our toys are often the tools we need to make our toys. There's a lot of brotherhood within the unwashed masses! ;)

Peter,

We've not met, but you are right - it is actually more than just an affinity for a specific tool - there is the "inherent" need to create something that I think lies at the heart of it... This is why I consider knifemakers to be more than "machinists" - I think of y'all as artists who simply work in a medium comprised of steel instead of oil or ceramic...

But since I'm not very good with my hands, or my words, what has attracted me the most to knife collecting is the artistry behind each handmade piece (heck, for that matter, the same can be said about a lot of the new production knives - there's just more of them! LOL!!)

And it's understanding the process that goes into this particular form of artistry that keeps me lurkin here, trying to understand what y'all put into the pieces of art the I find I love to collect...

Happy Hammerin'!
