Yestarday I got DMT Dia-Sharp Extra Extra Coarse 120 Mesh 120 Microns Diamond benchstone - thanks to Ashtxsniper.

I just tried it. I decided that I will try to get rid of serration on my first good folder CRTK Apache, which I like a lot, but I hate serration. I thought, I will start today and will see how will it go, after all I may get rid of it with belt sander.

To my big surprise, this Extra Extra Coarse DMT works same as sander! In 20 minutes I have perfectly plain edge on ATS-34! I may say that same time or more I may spend on belt sander, but stones give you much more control over this process to make it more precise etc.

I am very impressed, I did not really expect this performance!

I tried different brand before 150 grit and it was never close, it was worse then DMT Dia-Sharp Coarse which 350 Grit. I guess this monocrystallite really work.

Thanks, Vassili.

Are you saying "expensive but worth it?":D

Price is about $85. I do not consider this as an expensive - diamond stone 8"x3" with this grit - it is cheap, however it is personal matter. I was really impressed and excited with such a performance, never see anything like this before.

Now I get rid of serration also on my Apache III for like 10 minutes - it is small knife. Those fast steel eating stone - is what I was searching for a while, now I can do anything I like to any edge in no time!

Thanks, Vassili.

I paid just over $60 for my D8XX and I love it. It reprofiles like a mother, just use heavy pressure and steel starts turning into dust and formerly thick edges are suddenly thin. I still want a belt sander for this type of work, but if you don't have the space for a belt sander or the job isn't too major the D8XX sure works well for thinning out a knife fairly fast.

Mike

Edit to add: mine is 8"X3", I didn't think they made it in 6"X2"

Yes it is 8" by 3" I corrected my post. Thanks.
I did not try to regrind with it, but I can not imagine de-serration with anything else. Belt sunder need much more attention - simple mistake may ruin knife easy with all precautions it may take same amount of time and also I try not to touch edge with belt - it may overheat very edge and damage HT,

Thanks, Vassili.

Now if only they would make that thing in a triangular rod shape to fit the Sharpmaker.............. WOW!

I am glad you liked it so much. DMT makes the best diamond sharpening products available IMHO. Wait till you get to try the ultra ultra fine 8000 mesh stone you will be impressed with it also.

I've got all the grits but the XX Fine and I'd really like to get it but I haven't seen much of a consensus here as to how happy folks are with it.

Thom was nice enough to write me his impressions and they give me pause (at least for the time being).

I'd love to hear other opinions. (In a new thread if Vassili feels that it will muddy things up in this one.)

It is almost on par with my leather unloaded strop as far as the level of sharpness you can get out of it. It is way way faster than leather though. I use it then a follow up with a few strokes on the leather strop and my knives are as sharp or sharper than my strait razor I shave with. Buy it if you don't like it sell it here I am sure that you can get your money back.

Are you stropping on it or sharpening with the edge leading? (And thank you for your feedback.)

I sharpen with the edge faceing me and drawing the knife towards me on all my stones. On my leather strop I sharpen the blade with the edge facing me but I push the bade away from me and in to the strop. This allows the knife to cut better with a pull stroke instead of a push stroke. Sharpening on leather the way I do can be difficult but it preserves this edge and makes the knife cut better.

I actually tried D8EE on same Apache and Apache III. May be I need to wear it out little bit, but edge does not turn mirror like which I usually have after 6 micron diamond powder loaded in leather. However I can say that it is finer that Extra Fine 1200 which also seems finer then EzeLap 1200 I used to use. It feel like Michael Lovett described - I was able to cut out skin on my finger tips easy. However it is just my feelings I did not run any tests to measure it.

I think I will use D8EE more to wear it out on some big knife, right now surface does not feel smooth yet.

I follow it with leather loaded with 0.3 microns diamond powder.

So I can not yet give my final conclusion on this.

Thanks, Vassili.

This is 11.05"x2.5" diamond stone and leather glued to Ebony on 15 degree stand I use for sharpening. Tomorrow I'll post new pictures, after upload my website - I only can do it from the office.

Nozh2002,

Your experiences with the D8XX and D8EE mirror mine. We've been bragging about places that sell the D8XX for under $62 here for a while so I'm surprized you paid so much. Even still, with the cost of sanding belts and electricity and time spent reflattening the curved edge left by sanders, the D8XX is more than worth it.

Yes, I should admit it - I did not do much research before I bought it and so it is close to MSRP in some web store - shame on me...

Anyway I am very happy with it. Just fix edge on Swanp Rat HRLM- usually it take quite a time and last time I had to use belt sander to make MiniUncle Mojo to looks like a knife, today it takes may be 20-30 minutes (not few evenins as usual). Those SR have thickest edge in the industry, but I am not chopping concrete... Steel is very well heat treated - so thick edge with hard steel require quite an effort to re-profile.

Thanks, Vassili.

I am curious on how you use the 15 degree jig. I have not seen anything like that. Can you share your technique? I have used Sandow's method of adding a coin stack, which works pretty well but I think your method takes it to thenext level.

That jig is a good idea! But I was curious to see the knife with the serrations removed, as I've thought of doing that before, but wasn't sure how without a belt sander.

I've considered trying to build a 75 degree jig for stones, to use like a Sharpmaker, i.e. slicing straight down. Have you tried anything like that?? Has anybody here??

Looks like you could use Vassili's jig in that fashion by just standing it up on the base and using it as you would the Sharpmaker.
