I kinda doubt many audiophiles hang out on BF, but if you do, or if you just know a good amount about audio, here's a question for you: I'm going to college on Tuesday ( ), and I want to get a new speaker system to go in my dorm. Any suggestions for a good audio quality, preferably small, preferably cheap (doubt it's gonna be all three) 2.1 or 2.0 speaker set-up?

There are guys here that know a lot more about audio than I do, but until they show up :D check out Klipsch.

I'll tell you what is said on the AVS forums about speakers

1) Any speakers YOU like are fine.

2) Avoid BOSE speakers. You can either pay less for speakers with similiar sound quality as BOSE or you can pay the same amount for speakers with better quality. IF you buy BOSE you are paying for the best marketed speaker available.

Virtually any other comment about speakers is subject to debate.

Good Luck

I was thinking Klipsch, but it'd be nice if it was slightly less than $130...

And Baker, I know that speakers are subjective... but I'm looking for specific suggestions.

I did give a specific suggestion. It was just which one to avoid.

hi there depends what you are looking for and the kind of music or video they are going to be used on but it has been my experience that speakers are not the place to scrimp
i like bass and i like it loud and eveything from old bluegrass to heavy metal so i use cerwin vega (they do rock)
i have four hp-215(dual 15") and four self powered pioneer 12" subs and a five piece 6" cerwin vega surround speaker system (1 center 2 rear and 2 front) pretty decent sound especially when its giving you a masage and keeping a head on your beer at the same time lol (it vibrates that bad)
i also have a set of four cerwin vega d-7 12" i bought almost 20 years ago and they are still going strong and damned near bulletproof now i use them for my alarm clock probably the only 150watt full surround alarm around but i like it
i would recomend a set of these d-7's you should be able to get a set of(2) for 200-300 they dont take up a whole room and sound good enough for most movies or music and can handle the power if they have to
another lesson i learned was the power and features, mine has to do both audio and video with 5 dvd megaplayers and 1 recorder and 5 cd megaplayers and 1 recorder plus 3 vcr's and 2 satellite dishes and a computer so i need receivers but i went through 4 before finally getting my present one (it runs everything) they all worked fine but 1) not enough power and 2) not enough inputs so before you purchase a big amp or receiver be fairly sure what you want because it sucks buying a new one every year or two (trust me)
hope this helps
ps borrow music from the others in the dorm if they have to listen to it it might as well be something they like

Jeez, Buckman... now way I'm getting one of those, let alone two! I don't have room in my dorm, no way, no how.

What is your price range?

A good source/front end is more important in a system than the speakers. If the information/data was not recovered from the source media, you are not going to hear it downstream.

Go and audition the speakers at a high end audio shop. Are you going to leave the speakers set up or on a shelf? What kind of music do you listen to? What is the rest of your system?

Just because the speakers are expensive, doesnt mean they sound good. Trust your ears.

Listen, I was hoping for downrange (pricewise) of the Klipsch at $130. I think I may just go with those, as a step up from Logitech or whatever.

A small step down from the Klipsch in price is the Boston Acoustics BA4800 Multimedia. It's a 4.1 set-up. Quality is very good and they can be had direct from BA for $99. I've got their Media Theater speakers and have been very pleased.

I’m a semi-audiophile, and for college I would recommend a good set of headphones. They will give nearly as good sound quality, you can basically "shut off" the most of the time noisy dorm rooms, they are portable for the most part depending on what you get, which comes in handy at summer break when you have to clean everything out and you can use them anywhere library, on the way to class, etc.

If you get a set of in ear monitors you can really shut the world off, they are like wearing a pair of earplugs that music comes out of. Some of the downsides are a lack of soundstage, or depth of the music because of they way they sit inside your ear canal, and you get what you pay for. Decent ones start at about 100.00.

Check out www.head-fi.com if you are interested in headphones. There is more information there than you can shake a stick at. Just read 1st and ask good questions with detailed descriptions of what you are seeking and people will be very willing to help you pick the right phones. - Just a warning, you might not get a good answer if you say " Help, I need phones, recommend me some" without stating musical tastes and a few phones you have narrowed your selection down to.

Good luck,

Already got the phones down pat (well, at least for my price range.) Sony EX71s for when I'm on the go, and Sennheiser PX200s for when I'm sitting and listening (car, home, w/e). What I'm looking for is speakers, so I can share the experience (hopefully I won't be alone most of the time  )

Depends on how much you wanna spend...

The suggestion on BA is good, I've always liked BA at their price points because they are typically a warmer sound.

I also think the good headphone suggestion is great.

One thing I've realized after spending a fortune in audio gear is that all the money in the world isn't going to buy you a system that will sound good anywhere but in the room its in.

altec lansings and logitech are both ok
the important thing is
CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE?
there's no point in paying 100 dollars more if they all sound the same to you
they all sound the same to me
as you can probably tell im not an audiophile :)
