Aurum Etchings Article & Relationship with Buck

Im not sure if these were done by Buck, whatever Im pretty sure they would not want to be associated with those etches. Yes they do have some really nice etches.
Regards Tim

So Tim, what do you think about me putting a Stag Handle on my 103 ??? ITE

Im not really sure, It would have to be the perfect peice of stag, one can only contour the end parts of the stag to the pommel and crossguard without loosing the nice stag grain in the middle of the handle, but if you use a peice of timber you can contour the whole of the timber to match the pommel and crossguard, You will notice on a timber handled peice the whole timber handle shape is nicely crafted not just the ends where it meets. You could use black ebony, it think the plain black would look good near the fine gold etch. if you want sometthing very pretty and decorative you can use something like amboyna burl same as on my knife here

As I suspected i can confirm that the etches I posted on the bottom of page one were not done by Buck Knives.

Tim, that amboyna burl handle looks great... I'm going to take the blade over to Leroy's and see what he thinks and see what we can come up with... I have a sweet 103 with a stag handle and if he can make this one look just as good I might go that way... That amboyna burl wood is sweet, but I like KOA wood alot too... ITE ...

Somebody must have taken a fully assembled knife and tried to etch it.

Not sure but probably some backyard operator who doesnt mind defacing a beautiful item. I certainly would buy one like that myself but would only pay about 1/4 of what an unetched one would cost.

I wish they would or Buck would make more etched blades with Buffalos on them... Are all the etch blade knives in your photobucket yours??? Because they are all sweet knives... What Great etching they did back then... ITE ...

I agree with you on the buffallo I also think woolly mammoths look great etched.
Yes they are mine except for the Aurum kitchen knife set, I am fortunate i would not have most of them without Sams friendship.
Regards Tim

A couple years ago I owned the Henckels anniversary set. It came in a briefcase with a removable tray and it contained 11 (if I recall) knives. Each had a different wildlife etch and the work was just amazing. Although it was primarily a kitchen set, it also included a stunning example of Henckels' scarce 944 hunting knife. I sure wish I had held on to that set. I sold it a year or so ago but I still have copies of the paperwork that came with it.

Yes I know the set you are reffering to here below, they are a beautiful set, very fine detail and wildlife scenes. Only a few (200) of the total sets planned were ever produced, of that 200 about 100 of the sets went to Germany, 100 left for the rest of the world, Here is a document from Sam on them. click to enlarge.

Just to re-clarify my article on the part Aurum Etchings played in the success of the Buck model 110 as a collectors item. I do not wish to take credit away from Buck as this was always a beautifully desgined knife and continued to sell well as a utility knife, my point is only that around the late 70s and early 80s when the Aurum/Buck relationship introduced nicely engraved variations of the 110 that it increased its popularity amoung collectors significantly and that can be seen in the multitude of decorative variations the model 110 exists in today resulting from those early years when Aurum played a leading and primary role in significantly increasing its appeal amoung collectors. The Aurum/Buck relationship was the progenitor of a multiplicity of variations on the 110 spawned from those early years which continued long after Aurums closure in 1989.

Please permit me to make a bold assertion open to correction as follows:

Today the Buck model 110 would have more decorative variations than any other knife in history?

Or perhaps this would be limited to the production knife category?

Please correct me if Im wrong, we should have the knowledge base here to prove me wrong one way or another, if indeed I am???

As a result of this thread its exposure & lots of possitive input, Knife World has done an extensive article on Aurum Etchings. Does anyone know how I can post a PDF file so that i can post the front cover sheet of the magazine article???

I have just acquired both #2 knife and #3 knife in these pictures from The Republic Set from 2 separate sellers, and am thrilled to have them! Each one came in its own walnut display box... I already owned 6 other aurum etching knives...
