Turbodog wants me to help him make a knife out of AUS8 steel. I don't find any sources for it or info on heat treating.

My first question would be "why?" AUS-8 isn't terrible but it's not really all that special either.

It is not commercially available, it is real close to 8cr14mov or 440-c.If he wants to use that why not step up to ats34.

I agree with Stan.....440-C or ATS-34 (AKA 154-CM), or CPM154 ( particle metallurgy 154CM) All of these are equivalent or slightly better than AUS-8, and all are cheap.

I agree he wants it to be a survival knife the aus8 ranks just above the 440c SOG and some other makers are using it. Probably just to be different. I have some 440c on hand, so maybe we can go that route. Thanks for your input.

If you see some other maker using aus8, have closer look and see if it's not a premade kit knife blank

I think we have settled on CPM S35 VN never used this before, but it looks like some tuff stuff heat treating looks a little tricky but I have a Paragon Kiln with programmer so I think we can handle it.

Thanks for all the input.

Any you guys near central TX try to make it down to Waco I think the second weekend in October were going to have a mini hammer in at my place.
