aus8--aus8a

Thinking about buying a zero tolerance or benchmade folder soon(Christmas) may get both. but I really like the aus8a blades in both of these knives. The ka-bar is slightly older and has been put through all sorts of cardboard and plastic straps at work. Finally figured out how to use my lansky system to sharpen instead of using a pull through foxed angle that never did squat. While I can't get it back factory sharp yet it is shave sharp and useful on cardboard

AUS-8 is AUS-OME in my book.

Inexpensive, stainless, sharpens on the bottom of a coffee mug...

One of my all time favorite knife steels.

I love Aus8. It takes a really wicked edge and is easy bring back after dulling. I agree with everyone saying it's because the steel is not the latest and greatest. It certainly isn't the best steel around, but it's a great overall performer. About half of my knives are made from that steel. Oh, it also depends on who produces the blade. I think Cold Steel is probably my favorite as far as Aus8 knives go. Certain manufacturers seem to have better or worse Aus8. Just my two cents. :)

I prefer AUS-8 to many bragging steels. Often people use hardness or edge wear resistance as their figure of merit for blade steel rather than fine cutting ability. AUS can be honed to a more acute angle and a finer edge than most stainless. It is not as hard or wear resistant it is more of a razor blade steel. However it is harder and more wear resistant than common stainless.

AUS-8 can be a bragging steel too...just look at all the folks in this thread bragging about it. :D
Once you leave the small electronic world of Bladeforums and some other specialized knife-related social networking areas, no one at all gives a crap what steel is in your knife.
Most of them don't care that you have a knife at all.
Heck, most people don't care if you, me or anyone other than themselves (and perhaps their family and friends...maybe) even exists at all. ;)

This. I have a couple of knives in AUS 8, and they are good knives. If I am going to be working on something that is rough on edges, M4 is what I grab. Not so I can brag, just so I can keep going without farting around sharpening as often. All steels have a use. Pick the one that works for you.

I love Cold Steel's AUS8, excellently done by them
