AUS8 CRKTs getting cheaper?

I'm wondering if the flipper on both sides would make this knife "uncomfortable" to wear in the pocket utilizing the belt clip.

I bought this knife just recently from Knife Center (KC) for $40. It was the best deal on the web at the time.

I also had the same concerns that folks had in this forum and others about this knife and the incredibly low price. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box. This knife is awesome!

The CRM1614SFA is made in the USA and is big and sturdy. You can get the specs off of KC site. It has a very sharp Tanto blade; the clip allows you to carry it clipped to your front jeans pocket with blade down with no problem. It is a little bigger than your usual 4" blade due to the dual hand guards but its not an issue. I particularly like the dual hand guard and it suits the full size grip, which also is impressive. Its well built as you would expect from CRKT.

In the box you will get an extra clip w/screws and a tool to change the clip position, a nice option. The "single hand open" with the Carson M16 is very easy and fast. Although be warned, the first time I flipped it open I wasn’t holding on tight enough and it flew out of my hand and stuck in my hardwood floor :( D'oh! Super sharp you wouldn’t want to drop it on your foot.

Anyways enough of my rambling, remember on thing - YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPOINTED! The best deal around!

If you use the code "fall2006" you will also get a freebie knife, I got a knockoff Swiss Army, cork screw style pocket knife... you know the ones, they're usually red and have tweezers, screw driver and a couple blades. This one is from Korea but what the hell, it’s free and my son will enjoy it.

Oh and I also should add, shopping at knifecenter.com was a breeze and the knife arrived 2 days later, you wont have to worry about shopping there.

Chalk this one up as a good deal!

I have also had good luck with the knife center.

The description I read says 420C for the steel??? Also, could someone comment on the liner lock- I have always been leary of them, especially for a big, hard-use or tac-type knife. Why the emphasis on tip down carry? If you carried this knife tip up could you use the hilt like a "wave" to open as you draw? How sturdy/stiff do the scales feel?

Sorry for the "20 questions" but I have a SOG Xray Vision that I like, but I think the handle may be a bit weak (you can easily squeeze it and make it flex). This knife looks like a possible replacement, but I sure wish it had an ARC lock.

Thanks, Mike

You sound like you work there.

Mike,

I'll try to add some perspective to your questions from looking at my Carson M16.

Blade - The Carson M16 has the AUS-8 stainless steel blade, on the CRKT site http://www.crkt.com/steelfct.html they explain what the material blend consists of.

Liner Lock - the locking mechanism is Liner Lock as mentioned. It is deployed upon opening the blade and basically a piece of steel that is attached to the inside of the 6061 T6 aluminum handle. When the blade is opened the LL clickes into place. To close the blade you need to push the steel LL back against the handle. Its a classic design. I tried to imagine when holding the knife with the blade open, if the LL might be able to be moved to the side of the handle by accident. It doesnt seem possible to me because you really have to put your thumb between the two aluminum handle sides to get it to move.

Down Tip Carry - When the blade is closed it may be possible for the blade to move slightly open by friction due to the dual hand gaurd. Heavy movement might be able to get the blade tip exposed while in the pocket. If this occures in the up position you could stab your hand when reaching for it. Now I am speculating that this might be possible to occure. I have no experience of this actually happening but it seems possible. So, for safty keep the tip down, this is how the clip is screwed on by the factory anyways.
By the way, the tip and blade came plenty sharp, I do not need to sharpen it like you would on other new knife purchases.

All in all, this is a great knife for the price and will provide years of duty. Also, a friend of mine has the SOG SPEC Elite II which cost twice as much and when side by side the Carson M16 holds its own very well if not better ;)

I dont care for the SOG plastic handles myself.

For fourty bucks you cant go wrong. :D

By the way - I dont work there and dont have any affiliation with the knife industry. I just do what everyone else does when spending money. I research the forums and try to find out what others are saying about it, then try to make the best purchase. I did have trouble finding "customer" reviews on the Carson M16, that is from people who bought it and not from comercial sites who get paid to write nice crap. So, I thought I would try to write a decent review for others that are interested in this knife. I hope it helps you guys decide, like I said, it seems like a great deal and is now part of my EDC.

I know it's not the M 16, but I got my now discontinued CRKT M-18's for $28 for the first one and $13 for the rest of them (I gave a few as gifts). They are AUS 8, and have a solid lock up with the liner lock and LAWKS safety. I used to be higher on them but now I much prefer my Byrd G-10 Cara Cara to the M-18's. The Byrd's steel holds an edge better and sharpens easier, the CRKT Aus 8 burrs really bad for me. I also prefer the lockback of the Cara Cara to the liner lock of the CRKT. Plus, you can get the Cara Cara G-10 for a little over $20 at good on line retailers.

I just got another CRKT Michael Walker to replace one that had been stolen at work. I really like this knife. It (the old one) took all kinds of abuse. The first one I bought a year ago cost around 40. The one I just got I picked up on ebay for 29.99 w/5 bucks S&H. This knife locks up solid w/ no play at all. Interesting blade shape. You can't beat it for the price.
