AUSA-8 pros/cons?

Benchmade runs their AUS-8A at 60 HRC which is significantly harder than most so the behavior is likely different. It would be interesting to see Benchmade and Cold Steel AUS-8A vs Spyderco's VG-10 and see where the advantage lies in slicing aggression and push cutting edge retention.

Cliff, I'm not sure I've ever played with Benchmade's 8A. I did read about Benchmade's harder 8A, but haven't seen how brittle that might make it. The most recent 8A I've played with is Spyderco's.

That is the concern I would have as well, it tends to work well in use for a tougher stainless which isn't as extreme as the 420 class as most run it.

I really like AUS8 for all of the reasons stated. It is not as good as S30V but it can hang with 440C in my experience. I think it takes a sharper edge than 440C.
My son in law is the foreman over a crew of construction workers. I gave him a AUS8 Kabar Dozier over a month ago and he sings its praises. This guy cuts everthing with a knife not to mention using it for a screwdriver, scraper and chisel if need be. I tune the edge up for him every week or so. I expect to see it broken anytime but so far so good.

I think it is a very good steel for low to modestly priced knives. It holds an edge fairly well, and it is easy to sharpen.
