i want to buy a folder for a friend of mine that is going to Australia this summer, i am looking at knives in the 40 dollar range, but i want to know what sort of knife he could carry down under with no problems (legal and social problems)

So far i have looked at a CRKT urban shark amd a small BM accent

Well, I'm not sure on the legal side, but you can get three different sizes of CRKT Apaches (ATS-34 blade, alum. handles) at SMHW for EXCELLENT prices (the largest Apache is going for $25 I think!!). I would suggest that, as I think it's the best value going right now.

Hey LK, I can only speak for NSW and Victoria but carrying a knife is a no-no unless its part of yer job or you're a Sikh etc. Discretion recommended.

Actually Ferret, the law reads something along the lines of "Must have reason to carry a knife" (obviously simplified).

Something like a SAK is the best choice, as it's about as non-weapon as you can get.

I'd stay away from one handed folders if at all possible. If you're determined to get him a one hander, the smaller the better.

I'd put in my 2cents too. Like most British-styled areas (colonies, ex-colonies, etc.) you always need to have a reason to be carrying a knife, and "self-defense" is not a reason. Fishing, camping, for cutting open envelopes or boxes are valid reasons, and most LEOs are happy to accept those reasons, even if you aren't currently engaged in, or about to engage in, cutting.

If you're a halfway decent chap (no overt offensive tattoos, bike-gang affiliation) and you're not found drunk on the streets or participating in a protest rally or walking around in threatening manner, most cops wouldn't even give you a second glance.

Of course, don't go walking around with a 9" bowie strapped to you (unless you can conceal it as well as Croc Dundee

) even if you fit the above description. It would be very difficult to justify opening boxes with a 9" bowies anyways, unless you can show that the box has teeth and a tough leathery skin and was about to eat you (because it is now illegal to kill the crocs without a license except in cases of threat of bodily harm.)

So get him a SAK (locking type) or a small folder 3" and under, that looks like a proper gent's knife. eg Spydie Viele, William Henry, Buck-Koji Hara.
But even something as classy as the AGRussell Arkansas Toothpick (though it is a little over 4") would be fine. These links are just to give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

Tactical looking knives are ok too, but you are giving a gift aren't you?

I've not checked out any BM Ascents.

I do own the larger LUS, and really like it a lot. First, it is gray, rather than black. It has very smooth action, good lockup, is designed with utility in mind, but has the capability of a defense role. Good little knife for the price.

On the other hand, I really like my Apache 2. The Apaches have long handles compared to blade length. I usually don't like that, but in the Apache I do. I think either the Apache 2 or 3 woulld be a great gift. As was posted, SMKW has great prices on right now. Remember, the Apache has aluminum handles and ATS34 steel.
