Australian Cattle Dog (or Blue Heeler)

This is my Missy. In fact, today is her 7th. Birthday.

Now that's the 'look' that warrants the saying, "I want to be the person my dog thinks I am" Happy belated birthday, Missy!

You're right, Cate, this is a happy thread ... but then I admit to being a little biased.

Happy BD, Mrs. Missy!! :-)

Now, that's Charlie today (103 days old). He's growing more and more of course. Now Charlie eat 3 meals per day (07:00AM, 12:00AM, 07:00PM), he's weight is 8,0 kilos now and he eat 400 grams per day (50% meat, 25% vegetables, 25% brown rice + 1 egg including the shell and some olive oil).
Charlie wake me up every morning at 04:15AM to go to the bathroom (errr..our small garden): you should set your watch on him! :-) After that we play around for 1-2 minutes in the kitchen (hes' bedroom), this means he bite my hands softly and want some strokes. Than he go again to sleep until 06:30AM. In the meantime, I sleep on the sofa, because I don't want to disturb again my wife which is sleeping in our bedroom...that's my life for the moment fellows! :-)
Anyway we are really happy with this puppy, he's a real cool companion.
I'm learning step by step what an ACD want: well, for sure he want at least 2-3 hours of REAL strong activities, I mean running and jumping and playing free around in the woods. A short walk with a leash is absolutely not enough for Charlie as an ACD, no matter the weather or temperature.
BTW, I have found a toy that Charlie seems to like more than the others he tried at home; hes a "fox", by Kong. Is fairly expensive (some 20USD or so), but he like a lot to play with, is a really robust stuff and also make a noise similar to "eeehhhh" when Charlie bite the body so is somehow interactive.
That's all folks for the moment, see you soon with Charlie and your own puppies (please post pics if you want!).
Oh let me know please if you like the paracord collar I made for Charlie!

My personal experience is that Heelers are complete crap for anything other than an outside working dog that does nothing but drive cattle all day.

BUUUUUUT since all dogs have personality to consider and Charlie is looking pretty good, I'd just ask that you please trail the hell out of him. Seems like untrained Heelers are a nightmare. I would also guess that a trained Heeler would be a very sturdy and predictable member of the family. You can lose with a dog like that.

Good luck with Charlie!

^ I wonder how Charlie would feel about you, if he were to spend a minute of his life watching that YouTube video, the one that you just posted of yourself smashing that guitar? You mad, bro? ;D

Back on topic: You are correct Cate- this is a very nice, & happy thread...and Charlie, is absolutely adorable!

I'm a firm believer, that dog's (and many animals for that matter), most often are a reflection of their owners. I've also learned from personal experience- the more time & love you invest in an animal/pet, the more you are rewarded.

I spent nearly 6 months up in North Central Idaho this past summer, working on my best friend's cattle ranch. There were a couple of occasions that we had to herd the cattle & calves to different parts of the ranch. My buddy & I were on quads, his son & a friend of his were on horseback, & we had an Australian Shepard, & Heeler. It was amazing watching those 2 dogs do what came so natural & instinctive. The hard part with them- keeping them away from the huge population of white tail deer.

I think that you made an excellent choice! Please continue keeping us updated.

Susan, your dogs are lucky to have you and vice versa!

Kelama, thank you for your post above too. My MT born and raised husband has several close friends who are ranchers (Generations of them.) as you may remember. Some of them have this breed of dog too. They love their dogs and how they work for them.

Take care.

Cate
