Just after info I’m going to import a knife from the USA into Australian it’s worth under $1000 AUD, I’m just wandering what if any import taxes I will be charged? Thanks!

I've never been charged anything if it was under AU$1,000. It just goes straight through customs.
Yeah unfortunately the GST threshold for overseas purchases was removed last month. Used to be only over $1K. Expect to see a lot more packages held until you pay GST and import duties...

My understanding is that the duty on items below $1k is targeting online retailers (Amazon and the like) and it is the seller that is suppose to have in place a mechanism to charge, collect and forward the applicable fees. It is also I believe the case that a seller has to do business in Aus that will incur a minimum of $75KA GST liability (so @$750K in sales) to be captured by the new process. I have also brought in a good number of items since the commencement and am so far seeing it as business as usual.

Just looked this up at https://www.homeaffairs.gov.au/busi...ods/importing-goods/duty-rates-and-taxes/low-

Looks like Andy is correct, should mean no change to us once we've purchased the item...

"From 1 July 2018, goods with a customs value of AUD1000 or less (low value goods) may attract the Goods and Services Tax (GST) at the point of sale if imported from overseas by consumers in Australia.

There will be no changes to:

  • the AUD1000 threshold for reporting and collection of duties and taxes at the border
  • border clearance processes
  • the flow of goods across borders
  • current import requirements for tobacco, tobacco products or alcoholic beverages.
Businesses with sales (subject to Australian GST) of AUD75000 or more to consumers in Australia within a 12 month period, will need to register with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), collect GST at the point of sale and remit that GST to the ATO."

Well, I had two Busse knives sent recently that customs picked up on.

The total in US dollars was just over $1000, well here you go this is what I was charged.

Doesn't help though, given the cost of a couple Busse to then get that on top. The part that really annoyed me was the extra fees were more than the actual GST.
Yeah mate Aussie customs is a scam being a knife collector here can be expensive!

Yeah not wrong, I had been pretty lucky up until then.
I think I'll just have one sent at a time in the future to keep below the $1000 when possible even if it costs an extra $50 in postage its still much cheaper not to mention the extra weeks it takes for customs to release it.
