Australian Knife Ban!

Take heed!!! Some District Attorney in Australia has decided that since confiscating all of the guns in Australia hasn't stopped crime that perhaps the banning of "collecters and exotic knives will be just the trick. I don't know if this is just some hairbrained idea or if it is actually going to be proposed as legislation. Maybe some of our Australian friends can tell us more. I do have a few more details and as soon as I can find more than a minute or two to spend on the forum I'll post them.

Actually I think the wording was "dangerous" knives... now how do you define that?! Double-edged knives, butterfly knives, and automatics are illegal already there (same here in New Zealand) - but if they want my kukri, they can come here and try and take it from me!

Is the dangerous aspect referring to a specific geometry or how it is advertized? Khukuris are used in the kitchen and garden and I would assume that you are still allowed these. Of course trying to convince someone that you have a 25" Sirupati for gardening would be a bit of a battle.

Australia is catching up. Maybe Andre will drop by and give us the down under scoop from a khukuri owner's perspective.

If we keep going pretty soon everything will be illegal.

Unfortunatley (or perhaps fortunately - other wise I might have thrown something at the TV in frustration) I was out camping when this was in the news, I will see what I can find out and let you know.

You would have thought they would have learnt their lesson from the gun-laws fiasco, one guy got close to a million dollars from the buy-back, he had 4 20mm aircraft cannon, which as we all know are a common weapon in bank robberies and muggings.

I would love to know how they plan to enforce laws like this, house-to-house search and seizure?

Looks like a major can of worms being opened by a group of people who don't know a steak knife from a butter knife.

In Malaysia the wording is "whatever blades > 8 inches" ~ you must have a special liscence issued by Ministry of Home Affairs ~ and those blades must be kept in a locker that located in one of the room in your house ~ meaning you can not display them on the wall of your guest room (like what Jim Powell doing); you can not bring along one of your knife especially a 20" Sirupati while doing your afternoon walk around (like what Cliff Stamp doing) !!! Don't you feel sorry for me ?

Jaeger,

There have been 2 reports which you may have picked up on. The first was a suggestion at a meeting of Attornies-General that the advertisement of "collectors and exotic" knives for sale by mail order should be banned. By this I assume he meant the Franklin Mint junk and fantasy knives. Note that this is not law and has not actually been proposed in any state in Australia.

The second, and I think Daniel may have seen this, is an agreement that all states in Australia will have uniform prohibited weapon laws. Here are examples of prohibited weapons in NSW. Nothing very unusual there although I would like to own a balisong

Take care,
Clay

Don't worry that the world might end tomorrow....in Australia it's tomorrow already.

Thanks for input, guys.

I cannot understand the mentality of those who think that outlawing knives and guns will save us. When one considers the fact that a high school kid (or just about anybody for that matter) can make a gun in the school machine shop in an hour or take a file and put it to a grinder and fashion a dagger in ten minutes that laws will make the difference.

Uncle Bill

I believe that what Clay has written about is what I saw in the article. LUNACY!!!

> i have a much simpler solution for the politicians that want to increase their feeling of worth by passing laws to protect the children, laws that infringe on the rights of the law abiding citizen, laws that will not be obeyed by the lawless...

why don't they get right to the point and outlaw fun?

if its fun, it is outlawed

my my flying a kite?
looks like fun
a kite could get entagled in a powerline
can't have that...

obviously all fun is bad
the world would be a much safer place with more fun infringment laws

oh by they way
can they pass a law banning asteriod collisions?

The banning and confiscation of guns and knives? It CAN happen here in the good ol USA. Rumor has it that Clinton and his ilk are preparing to use a midwestern state for a test case, in which "weapons" will be confiscated, if not "voluntarily" turned in.
Whether rumor or not...it COULD HAPPEN.
And, in my view, the sheeple would comply. The sheeple have allowed anything and everything the Clintons have wanted to do, illegal or not, but usually illegal and always immoral. Bill Clinton apparently will have his way, the recent gun owners "victory" nonwithstanding.
It all will come down to the backbone and beliefs of the individual, whether or not he will allow his property to be seized. I fear there is no collective backbone and the individuals who rebel will become "criminals". I paint the picture mightly gloomy....but it's early, and the day MAY get better.
