Australian Knife Makers

I'm pretty sure there are some Australian members on this board, and I've got a question. A friend of mine is Australia now and has offered to bring me back something if I would just tell them what. Of course my first thought was something knife related. Are there any Australian knife makers? I don't mean custom makers. I'm sure there are plenty of those. Rather, is there an Australian equivalent to a Kershaw or Spyderco?

If there is nothing really knife related, what else would you suggest as a souvenir? Keep it reasonably priced, but not junky. I would like something that I can't get in the states.

Most name brand knives get imported into Australia unfortunately as we don't really have any domestic mass production knife manufacturers. There's DEWEY knives that make knives for the Australian Army (you can order on their website) or we have some very good custom knife makers that I'm sure could make you a special knife using Australian wood and materials to your specifications (goggle can help you find someone).

I've been living in Australia for nearly 10 years now, and my first Australian knife was bought on Ebay Australia last year from custom knife maker Rob Podesta. His knives are real works of beauty, and he ships to the US very reasonably. Mine is a drop point hunter made with a polished carbon steel blade and Mallee burl (Eucalyptus) handle with an embedded Coober Pedy opal on each side. Not sure what you mean reasonably priced, but it cost: $200.00 AUD. (not including shipping). To me that's very reasonable for the quality.

http://www.mayallknives.com/ Paul is a custom maker and a very good one by all accounts.

i don't think we actually have a local mass-producer of knives in Oz. the manufacturing sector in Australia has been in sad decline for some years now.

A Kangaroo.

could be kind of difficult to explain to customs officers.

besides, an echidna tastes a hell of a lot better than a 'roo.

Oh yes. Kangaroo scrotum change purse.

One of those things that you keep forever and will always bring a smile to your face when you relate where it comes from. :)
I have one hanging on my camera case to keep SD memory cards, and have had many interesting questions from foreign tourists.

Others have directed you to some knife sources, but in my opinion there is no "really Australian" knife style or maker.

Case, Boker and Schrade Stockman knives are very popular in the bush, but are users not accessories and are often pretty beaten up.

Can they export real bearded dragon lizards? Seroiusly, they remind me of a 'cute' version of a former mother-in-law...

I'd have to visit the late Steve Irwin's zoo - maybe a shirt from there...

doing so legally is very, very difficult. getting the relevant formwork and suchlike is often something only a fully equipped Zoo can hope to acheive.

doing so illegally can land you in prison for a long, long time.

Australia, land of red-tape and bureaucracy.
