I have practiced with this lefthanded as it is for weapons retention as well as seat belt cutting.A spring assist would reduce any fumble factor with slippery hands. How about it Sal?

Forget your second cup of coffee this morning Ghosty?

Well, lets look at it a moment.Commerciability.aside,it certainly is feasable. There is room for a leaf spring. After a million,or so MC-1`s,this is hardly a problem. The blade wouldn`t stay under tension any longer than the 1/4 travel that the MC-1 does.after that it is inertia or gravity. It would not have tension all of the way eg.a coil spring. The existing package would not require drastic modification. You could keep the lock back, just assist the blade that 1/4 way past the initial lock spring tension. After that it shakes open without radical movement. The right scale would have to be slightly thicker to accomidate the button and safety. You could also get rid of the lock back and go with a button lock to retain the blade both closed and deployed in the same basic package. At least an interesting thought and, yes,I did have two cups, plus the obligatory donut.Any comments would be welcome.

Maybe you should consider a third cup..

I can say that I agree with you though....but I am pretty sure that Sal would say something along the lines of "an auto might bring up some legal issues in certain jurisdictions, and a Auto-Civilian is not in accordance with the direction that we are going, and continue to go"........

I haven't ever played with a civilian myself, neat thing like that seldom make it up here.....but I am sure that with the proper tooling you could convert a civilian yourself, or have a custom guy do it for you. I have seen articles on the Buck 110 conversion, and it does not look too complicated. Another plus isthat you could hide the release under the insert....hmmmmm....gees...that would peg the scale on the Oh-s#$t-o-meter to see one snap out...

Yekim, this may be the best April fool`s joke on the forums.I posted to the wrong one and, when I recieved your notification,I just went straight to the directed thread with my head still"up and locked".Coffee? This isn`t that bad an idea?Any patents are in the public domain and Spiderco could certainly make the modified model without too much difficulity.Given their stated philosophy, they wouldn`t but, they will probably read this.
After all of the mistakes that I have made in the last 50 years,I certainly don`t mind being the butt of a harmless joke.I`m going to leave this right here and see what happens. Thanks for your attention Yekim.
I f you like, you could direct the Spiderco group to this.I think that I`m too embarased to do it myself, besides, you may as well share in the fun being the only one to spot it.
I don`t know but what might have kept me off track is that both Camillus and Shrade have been making Mc-1`s(survival switchblades)since before Sal was born.No excuse.

Ghostsix,
Nothing wrong with posting Spyderco Civilian comments here, I have had several civilian "affairs"!
Let's see, double Civilian auto, hmmmmm.....
One button opens both blades??!! Ouch!
BTW, I thought I had the world's only left-handed Civilian!

Thanks for your tolerance Phil.If you aquire enough knives, you will own a Camillus.

Ghost,

I am glad you have a sense of humor on the subject...I got a little worried when I read your second post, and relieved when I saw the third...it is pretty funny...

I would post a wormhole thread from the Spyderco foru...but nah...

YeK

PS I still would like to see an Auto-Civilian as well....and an Auto-Police....and an Auto-Military....Drool....

Actually Yekim,I think that it would have to be a semi auto.A sense of humor and the option of suicide has gotten me through many a long dark night.

------------------

Semi-Auto? Do you mean double action? (open via thumbstud/hole or by pressing the button) most switches are semi-auto, they only open once each time you hit the release...

...I'd like to see a full-auto one.....klickklack klickklack klickklack klickklack klickklack klickklack klickklack klickklack klickklack klickklack klickklack klickklack klickklack klickklack klickklack....hahahahaha

No,I mean that I don`t think that the physics are there to kick it all of the way out.I believe that a spring could overcome the initial resistance and make it easy to flick the rest of the way with a good grip on the handle instead of a pinch grip. All of this within the design parameters of the existing knife. It would be easier to understand if you had one in front of you. However, the design is the same as other Spidercos. The mass and shape of the blade is the only difference.
The reason that I said left handed initially,is that I need my gun hand free.

We can't do that, but I know Phil is capable. And we supply Phil with Civilian blades for his "toys" Nag him. (Sorry Phil, say hi to Lola))

Thanks Sal and Phil,I know that this would not be commercialy viable.I was just wondering if the experts thought that it would work. The idea is interesting to me.

ghostsix,

I think it would work, but auto recoil may make it a little tricky to hold on to! Loosing control of a Civilian is a nightmare!
I would never carry an auto without a good safety (especially a Civ!) & that would further slow down deployment.
With practice, I can open a left-handed civilian faster than I can find an auto safety! Have you converted it to left handed carry or are you carrying it backwards?
The genius of the Spyderco opening hole is that, in my humble opinion, it makes an auto obsolete!!

Phil,I tried to get back to you earlier but,I got a server error.I bought two through the S.D.They are both rt.handed.Reversing the clip and rubber would help.I didn`t know that they were offered in left hand. This is an experts knife. It can be dangerous to the user trained in two dimensional blade work,as it operates in three dimensions. That said,I havn`t heard any horror stories. Thanks for your consideration.
