I'm interested in getting my first automatic. I just saw the Buck 110 Auto Elite and so far that is at the top of my list. But I'm not sure when it will be released. The only thing I'm leery about are the nickel silver bolsters tarnishing. But they're brushed so maybe that will help prevent tarnishing. Not sure.

Anyway , are there any other automatics that you would recommend? My price cap is going to be @ $400.

My first auto will probably be a Protech, maybe one of the Strider colabs. Or possibly a BM Mini Reflex

If you want the old school vibe..Mikov

I like AFO's and TR-4's

If I were to buy today I'd probably get a Rat Worx because they're interesting

Microtech LUDT or UTX85. LUDT will fare better in hard use, but the DA OTF is really handy.

Like another post says, the Microtech LUDT is a good choice. Another option that falls way under your budget is the Benchmade AFO 2. Great action and built like a tank, it’s a little large and heavy though. Another one would be the Benchmade Stryker auto, this one is solid and would carry a little easier than the AFO, also falls way under budget.

Before I would spend $400 I would try one out that was less expensive and see if you like it and also if it actually gets pocket time. I have 5 and I never carry any of them. In fact I just decided that I'm going to sell
all but 1.

My favorite right now is the Protech Rockeye in CPM D2. Fantastic EDC! Also have a TR-4 in CPM D2. If you like larger knives, the TR-4 is great!! They are both solid with one of the best EDC steels I've used.

Take a look at the Hogue EX01 or the little larger EX-A01. They're relatively new to knife making. I just bought their OTF and I can tell you these guys are serious about their product.

I like the MicroTech LUDT as an all around carry, but you have to love the Rat Worx just because they are such an unusual mechanism.

I just bought a Protech TR3 w/ the fish scale design scales. Of course I had to take it out of the box and make sure it was OK before giving it to him. I'm not really an auto guy but man this knife was impressive. So much so, I'll probably pick one up for myself at some point.

Anyone own a Protech Don?

I do, it's one of the blacked-out versions with CF inlays. It is very well-made and snappy, like all Protechs, but I only carry it for special occasions. It does not have a clip and the grind is not the most practical, so I have posted it for sale a few times, but I do still enjoy owning it.

Several years ago I bought a dozen of them from the manufacturer
direct. I had read that they were a very good auto for the money.
Well I was not happy with the knife at all. The springs are very week
and when you fire it the blade opens about half way. I gave several
of them away to friends and I still have about six of them put away somewhere.
