Just looking for recommendations and the reason behind it. I want a watch with ss band and automatic movement under 200. have looked around at some invictas, seiko, and others... would really love some input thought. I wont be diving anytime soon and not looking for a bunch of extras just kind of basic. with maybe the day/date feature.. thanks in advance... Dan

I like the Seiko SKX007 or the SKX009. I've had my 007 for a few years and it's still going strong. Amazon have them for around $180, but you can probably find them somewhere cheaper.

I also recommend going on the forum watchuseek.com. You'll get some good advice there.

Thank you i will have to check them out...

I wear an Orient Mako, which at the time I bought it could be had for $100.00 direct from the factory. Orient is owned by Seiko, but they use their own in house movements.

I agree: Check the Seiko 5 series. They have really nice stuff even for under 100$.

I have an orient mako and a seiko kinetic, mako is by far my favorite. I recently put a NATO strap on it as well. You can get them online for under 100$.

Havn't herd of these yet will look them up. New to watches, have only had g shocks. Bought three in the past 6 months love them:D now looking for something to wear out. For like special occasions ect.

There's a lot of decent deals on autos these days. Tissot makes some in your price range. Some cold war stuff as well like the Vostok K3 Submarine can be had for about $100 if you want to be a little different.

Seiko Divers, Citizen Eco Drives are all best bang for your bucks so are Seiko Kinetics, the latter two have power reserves of several months. Google Maratac they have super luminova, sapphire crystals (very scratch resistant and a fairly higher end for cheap Miyota inside of it.) Incredible bargain for what they go for.

Aftermarket SS bands are easy to get in rolex, omega, oyster, jubilee styles if you don't like leather. Used Victorinox are great deals, The Seiko 5 divers are great, the regular ones don't all look great but the divers all look awesome. I.E. Seiko SKZ 211. Depending on on your wrist size a true gentlemen's watch (smaller watch size) is a 1950's Omega Bumper Seamaster, you can find them all day for $250-$800 depending on if its SS, all gold, gold filled, etc..etc... there's also a lot of funky but cool finds like the Zodiac Astrographic, Enicar, Vintage Sandoz (not the new crap), happy hunting!!! It gets addicting quick, the watch thing that is.

I think I'm already addicted really want one of the reactor dive watches. Now that I have been looking... most likely will go with a seiko for now...

So no one likes the invictas huh? they seem nice for the price???

Nothing wrong with Invictas I have owned a few my only complaint is they are a little big and heavy for me Seikos 5 is one of my favorites the one I wear the most is a sterile Marathon got in trade here very lightweight keeps great time.

+1 for Orient Mako (or Mako XL :)

Don't buy Invicta, they are mainly copying other brands and trying to trick their customers into thinking they can get a massive discount, but in the reality not. Not an acceptable company policy...

I assume you're looking for a mechanical watch that comes with a nice steel bracelet you'll want to wear. "Want to wear" narrows it down considerably.

Seiko SKX779 (Black Monster), SKX781 (Orange Monster), SKX007, and SKX009 are Seiko's entry-level mechanical diver watches. They are at the upper end of your price range and they are very popular with divers and watch collectors.

Orient Mako is a mechanical diver watch that used to sell discounted for $98, which is the entry-level of entry-level. In 2009, Orient became a wholly owned subsidiary of Seiko. Seiko raised prices 15% and then had an "old price" sale, which is when I bought my blue Mako. It is a good, solid watch with a good bracelet. Some Orient watches have weak lume. Mako's lume is not as good as Seiko's, but it is useable and good enough for me.

There are hundreds of Seiko 5 watches. I own six. Most come with folded link bracelets you immediately remove and replace, unless you don't have another $15. The newer models have somewhat better bracelets, but I haven't seen one I wanted to wear.

Seiko 5 Sports are a different story. They are bigger and heftier, with 100 M water resistance. You can hand-wind the newer models and set ("hack") the second hand. They have good bracelets.

Take a look at Poor Man's Watch Corner and Wayne's World of Watches. They have a big selection of Seiko 5, Seiko 5 Sports and Seiko Superior, and they have excellent photography.

Citizen 7 are like Seiko 5 with weaker lume. Crappy folded link bracelets. Citizen 7 Sports are like Seiko 5 Sports, a little cheaper but much harder to find. They are big hefty watches with good bracelets.
