They are illegal to own even in the privacy of your own home let alone carry one (with the usual leo,mil and one armed man exemptions).Personally I don't carry them in public (not worth the hassel) but nobody tells me what I can posses in my own home.

Sorry that is not correct unless Rochester (or the county Rochester is in) has a specific law about it, the Sate law does not say that, although many LEO's will tote that line (some from ignorance, some from ego). In NYC autos are a no-no, can't own, can't have at home. Other counties have other rules.
PL 265.20(a)(6) Exemptions: says that if you have a valid hunting or fishing license you may use an auto while in the act of hunting or fishing or going to and from hunting or fishing. Which implies you can have one at home.
I am not a lawyer so YMMV.
Also convincing a cop that you can have one is another story altogether.
Monroe county must have similar laws to NYC.Just this past summer a woman was charged with possessing a swithblade at home (it was a POS stilleto). The evening news described it as "a deadly switchblade knife"
