Automotive coil spring HT

I've acquired a few automotive coil springs (from Ford Crown Vic's) and am trying to find data on how to properly heat treat them. I found a chart that suggests that they are 4063 steel. I did a search for this number and for coil springs and found a lot of threads, but nothing on heat treating. I also checked the HT sticky. Any assistance in this matter is appreciated.

To be realistic, you have no idea what they are, so any HT is a guess. Most folks start with a HT like 5160. If that works, stick with it. A brass rod test is advisable as you zero in on the temper.

Try 1525F for 5-10 minutes soak, and quench in medium oil.
Temper at 400F twice for an hour each.

Tempers could need to go as high as 450F to get an edge that doesn't chip.

I emailed a spring manufacturer in Calgary, Alberta (Standen Spring) and they said all their stuff is 5160. I would think the stuff you got could be heat treated successfuly about the same way as 5160.
