Autos vs. Assissted and Manual

I feel that autos are starting to become outdated. I think that most quality manualsand asisted blades open just as fast as autos and cost half as much. Just a thought. Do you guys agree or disagree?

Manuals these days are far more reliable than autos:

They are easier to maintain, tougher, cheaper, and lighter (generally).
Manuals are also better around sheeple, but they will always deploy as fast as an auto during a defense senario (a decent quality manual)

More moving parts; more to maintain, more to go wrong. On the other hand, I've never used an auto before... just speculation.

I LOVE the Gerber F.A.S.T. assisted folders. Love. Seriously. My wife is jealous.

Carried one for 2years now. No problems at all.

Slim, durable, light, sharp... fast.

F.A.S.T. Draw for EDC, mini F.A.S.T. draw for places where knives are frowned upon, Covert F.A.S.T. for SD in places guns are frowned upon. They all open the same, close the same, and are all reliable.

Oh and Bob, loved your work on AFV, not so much that show with the twin midgets tho.

Wait, are you saying that your real name is actually Bob Sagget?

Anyways I think that autos aren't so popular because of stupid laws, and stupid sheeple. Sure there isn't much point in autos anymore with quick deploying manuals and assisted openers, but I like autos because I think that they are just plain cool. Its kind of like some people with their Sebenzas, they like them for the design and engineering that goes into them. I appreciate autos(quality ones) on that same level.

Emerson Wave feature is the best of all, as long as it's on a knife you like. My CQC-10 opens as the knife come out of your pocket, no manipulation of a button/lever/hole etc to open the blade.

im not a really big fan of the newer autos that have come out but switchblade stilettos and the like are much loved in my book. a nice classic design

I like assisted and manual, as true autos are not allowed in my state if im not mistaken (WA). So I carry an assisted opener, or a flipper, or a quick manual. I also usually carry a bk11, so no worries there about moving parts, dirt, or deployment speed.

Can't really judge them cause I never owned an assisted or auto, and most of my knives are traditional folders that u can't even open with one hand...auto opening never appealed to me at all, it always gave me a vibe of "not so safe", and most of all, I never felt the need for it. Also, I think switchblades are illegal here (I'm not sure cause I was never interested in it)

It comes down to what you prefer or in some cases, what you're legally allowed to carry. Trying to decide which opening method is "better" is an endless circle with no clear answer. Carry what you want and me happy we have so many choices. :)

I have a Microtech Ultratech and BM AFO II and love both of them. The AFO gets carried everyday. I honestly don't think it has that many more moving parts than any assisted but I could be wrong. Compared to my ZT 301, I don't think it is any more complicated than that and the ZT costs $100 more. The real reason is state laws have made owning an auto damn near impossible and the get a bad rap. It is true that assisted and manuals can be opened just as fast but I guess the local governments have decided that autos are weapons and assisted/manuals are tools. You don't need an auto but they sure are cool.

well, some guys can open a manual even faster than an auto.
and there are not many places that you can carry an auto with ya.
so, AUTO is fast, MANUAL is legal, ASSISTED is PERFECT.
get yaself a Kershaw man

I never warmed towards autos. I've had a couple malfunction on me, seen another do so on someone else, & have heard of a few others. Of course, other types can have issues, too, but an auto does have more parts. Along the same lines, I'm not big on A/Os, either. I guess it depends. If you're going to use the same knife day in day out (Like strictly for work, whatever that may be), I prefer manual folders. Having said that, if one likes autos, great. They're just not for me.

I do think the waved feature on Emersons (& waved Spyderco Delicas/Enduras) is an excellent feature, but like anything else, either can't be 100% relied upon &/or should be trained with, to ensure that it reliably opens.

I also think autos suffer in popularity due to so many states having laws against them. Fortunately, that hasn't been an issue for me, but it can be for most.
