I was just interested to know what the average age of a knife maker is. I would have made this a Poll but i couldn't figure out how to do it.

I don't class myself as a maker yet because i haven't sold anything but for the sake of kicking things off.

I'm 21 this year.

I am 40 and have been learning to make knives for the past 3-4 years with very limited time to do so. I have loved knives since I was little but very raw at making. My new years goal is to spend a lot of time in the shop this year and progress.

Valid question, even if it has been asked 200 times before.

Nice to keep these questions fresh for "Those who want to know".

Here is a little tidbit about me (in case anyone cares)

I'm 63 1/2 years old.

I started (seriously) making knives in January, '04.

I retired from 32+ years in technical education in December, '06

I am now a full-time maker who makes pretty much what I want, and have been fortunate enough to sell everything I make.

MOST IMPORTANT - I have never enjoyed anything more in my journey through life.

Hoss, you just keep working at it. At your age, you have the whole world ahead of you. Work your a** off and learn all you can. Every knife you make will be better than the last if you are truly dedicated to the craft.

Hang in there my friend,

Robert

Add them up and divide by the number of posts.

Thanks stacy. I know how to find an average. I mean I was interested in hearing the average MAKERS age not just people who like knives.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It's always interesting to hear what experience everyone has had.

I'll be 35 this month. Been taking knives apart for as long as I can remember. I got serious about making knives at age 16 and for the last 11-12 yrs have just concentrated on building folders.

Tim,
I'm 61 and have been making knives for 50 years.

I wasn't trying to be a sarcastic. What I was saying was that none of those, or these posts give you an average...I only gave you my age, Robert his, Chuck his, etc.. The only way to get the average would be to "average" it from the data collected. I was providing a larger data field for you.

Ok sorry. I didn't really mean it to be that specific. I'm not actually looking for raw data.
Just interested to know some of the more active makers ages for interests sake.

now that that's settled. No wonder your a good maker if you've been doing it since your 11. I can hardly imagine an 11yr old making a knife. What a strange image. Do you still own your first knife?

I made my first "knife" when I was 8

I made a big puddle of wd-40 in the driveway, lit it on fire and stuck a big framing nail in there to heat up

when the fire went out I grabbed the nail with some pliers and bashed it with a framing hammer right there on the concrete.

I was having a great time but I don't think it really counts towards knifemaking.

I made my first real knife (having actually studied the process and learned some stuff) in June of '04 it's a god awful ugly thing but I still have it.

I just turned 31 and I look forward to making knives for many years to come

ha ha, probably still more useful than some of the knives you see on places like ebay:D
