Average Age of a Knife Maker?

That's s great story taylor. Sounds like it all worked out perfectly and your wife sounds like an angel!

Thanks for the kind words, Tim. We're not out of the woods yet, but we're enjoying every minute (well, about 95% of every minute) of it. Still encountering those lessons that sting pretty good, but those are the ones you learn from for sure.

And regarding my Wife, you have no idea mate... She's the best. Supportive, smart, REAL easy on the eyes and she even cuts out blade and scale blanks on the band saw and keeps the books too.

What more can you ask for in a Girl Friday?:D

Take care Tim,

Taylor

Nice, same age as me. You've got a few years jump on me knife making though. I've seen some of your blades up for sale recently. They look really solid on design and construction.

I'll be 37 this spring, and have been making knives off, and on since 2007. I think about 10 or eleven so far. My avatar is my last one made.

I'm 28, haven't made many knives yet (only completed 9 so far) but will have everything I need to finally assemble my GIB tomorrow! I'm hoping to continue making knives but I'm really excited about the prospect of making straight razors as well. I have unintentionally sold 1 knife and am doing this primarily to keep me sane while in med school but I can tell this is going to go on for a long time once I'm done with school! I got started while trying to find projects for my Boy Scouts when I was a Scoutmaster in Pocatello, ID (about 2 years ago) and 2 of my boys were struggling as their father was just sent to jail. The older of the 2 was really into knives (as many teenage boys are) so I started looking into it. Got some help from Kelly Cupples and Guy Isom and a lot of direction from guys on here and I've loved every minute of it and I really think it helped those boys out. I'm still very close with them and they treasure the knives that they made with their own hands and get to keep and use. I'm really looking forward to the day my son can grind by my side; he's 4 now so it's a few years off still but he keeps asking if he's old enough to make his own knife yet :)

Before deciding on med-school (chiropractic to be exact) I was contemplating going to gunsmithing school and there are many days when I wonder what the heck I'm doing in med-school and that I should have gone that route but I figure that will change once I'm out of school and working.

I`ve been making knives since 1964 and will be 60 in April.I would like to say this,it`s a learning curve,I`ve worked with people like Don Fogg Ed Halliganand a lot more.Iam a full time maker now and still love the challange. Robert

sounds like your knife making journey has been a rewarding one so far.

I love to hear people still enjoying themselves after so many years. Makes me evan more motivated to get fully into this thing. By the way. that's a really nice looking folder in your av.

35 here, I had to think about it for a minute. :D It is great to see everyone doing this but big respect to you younger guys doing this.

40 here, joined BF in mid 2007 due to my life long love of knives. found out people are actually making knives and started dabbling by the end of 2007.

I actually made my first knife from a toothbrush and disposable razor back in 1999 but we won't talk about that.:D

LOL, except for the toothbrush part, your story here is a lot like mine, Ryan:thumbup: Found BF in 2007 because I love knives, spent lots of time collecting, buying, selling productions, and just like you realized people were actually making them!! I thought I was hooked on buying knives, but making them is even more addictive!!

64 - been in the business 30 years - you know in the 20's/30's the average knife maker was dead at 35. They lived about as long as a coal miner did at the time. Black lung i guess. Tom Hudson
