Perhaps it would be helpful to prospective buyers to know how long they should expect to wait after ordering a knife. Why don't you folks post your experiences in a short format showing brand, model, vendor, wait, and status. I'll start:

Brand: Ranger
Model: RD 7
Vendor: Sage Creek
Wait: 2 months
Status: Still waiting

I am interested not only in custom knives, but also in regular beaters. I am not sure what the usual wait for a BK7 from New Graham is, for example, and any personal experiences would be helpful to me in deciding.

New Graham's website indicates the number of pieces currently in inventory. If the knife you want is in stock, "wait time" will basically be how long it takes your preferred delivery carrier to get it to you. For me, it's only 2 days to my door via USPS Priority mail.

Best thing you could do in a case like that is email the folks at New Graham and ask. Mike and Mary Beth are great to deal with and would give you a fast, accurate answer.

If, for example, in your case you thought it was taking too long for your RD7 from your chosen vendor you might be better served just asking straight out "Has anyone else had to wait this long for knife model X from merchant Y?"

I agree that it can be helpful to know other people's experiences. But if we start posting every transaction from every vendor I think we'd end up with a lot of information in no particular order that, as Rat Finkenstein said, could always be subject to variation.

I don't know, is it? Perhaps patterns would emerge. Why is it a bad topic? I think it is a perfectly valid aspect of knife buying, and certain knives might have a "built-in waiting period". If that is so, people should know they buy that waiting period when ordering the knife.

Most makers are honest and let their buyers know what their "average" waiting period is.

And most makers do their very best to stay close to schedule.................

I don't think there is a built in waiting period for any knife. Sometimes when an order is placed the dealer will have it in stock and you will receive it very quickly. Other times the dealer will have to wait until the next shipment arrives. That could be a day or two, a week or two, or even longer. With customs it will depend on the popularity of the maker. Ranger knives are very popular right now and the waiting period could be quite long.

It depends upon the maker.
I have knives I have waited 6+ years for.
If a maker already has a long waiting list, the wait is longer.

I ordered a Ranger RD 9, in stock, from Sage Creek last Friday morning, it shipped that afternoon, I recieved it today. Total wait, 3 1/2 business days. I'm not sure I've ever had better service anywhere else.

I have a few custom on order for several months now. The last update I got from the makers was that it will now be sometime after June. It seems they are all busy getting ready for some kind of big goat "love-in" in Atlanta.

I don't think it's a bad topic or a bad idea. I'm sorry if you took my post to mean that, I didn't intend it come across that way.

When reading your original post, the method of carrying this out just didn't strike me as efficient because the volume of information could be overwhelming. I think the idea could be good, but I didn't think the proposed execution would serve it well.

I agree that it varies a lot, especially with custom knives. And delivery time can be greatly affected by how much service you are willing to spring for. But for off the shelf knives with standard shipping...

H.I. 2 to 3 days
knifeworks 3 to 5 days
888knivesrus 3 to 5 days
thebrightedge 3 to 5 days

I haven't had any big problems with established dealers. But I have had a run in or two with a couple of ebay dealers. Hope this helps.

Speaking as a custom maker, giving an amount of time a customer has to wait is a very difficult task. Right now I'm running 8 to 10 months backlog with 1 year approaching quickly. These wait times for me are the long of it. I've been cranking out the knives pretty steadily this year with about 50 to 60 already out the door. I try and give a reasonable amount of time because something my come up and set you back a month or two. Again, not speaking for other makers, mainly for myself, but I'm sure most feel the same way.

imho it varies from having it in stock (lotsa models from crawford/nealy/ralph/etc) to 10+ yrs (ernie emerson for 1), bob loveless is probably 20+ yrs lol.

there is no real right "time" ya can expect to wait, it all just depends.
