A co-worker brough in a well worn but very smooth, not loose, bali for me to sharpen. It is all black accept the latch. The blade is 4 inches over all with a cutting edge of 3 and 3/8 th inches. The front of the blade is marked AWMA, Inc. than 1328 under that. The back of the blade is marked SURGICAL STEEL than under that it is marked MADE IN JAPAN. The front of the blade has a partial face and NINJA etched on it. The handles appear to be made of Zink? The latch is not black and may be chromed? He is not willing to part with it but I was just curious and wanted to know more about this knife and it's manufacture. Any one out there have any info they would like to share? Thanks!

I believe it's AWMA, Asian World of Martial Arts. They're still in business. They've got a website. Try an infoseek search for it.

Balisongs -- because it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing!

Thank you Chuck.
I checked their web sight out. They do not show this knife as being one that they currantly carry. I am mostly interested because it seems well made, if not a bit heavy. I would be interested in finding a few more of them if they are around?
It may be that because this one has not been manipulated very much and it is not that well made after all. If that turns out to be the case it would help me to determin how hard I want to look for these and how much I would be willing to pay if I do find any.
Do any of you own or has any one had any experiance with these knives?

Currently I know for a fact that Asian World of Martial Arts doesn't include their name on any balisongs currently. Of course this doesn't mean that they haven't in the past. Here is your link. www.awma.com

As far as I know, the Taylor Cutlery Company is the only company to ever import Butterfly knives from Japan. If you have a Japan made Butterfly knife in your hand, then you will know why I am eager to get a hold of some myself, and looking into importing them. It may take a while, but good things come to those who wait and preserver. I just talked to the purchasing agent of the biggest knife wholesaler in the country. He said no one is offering him any butterfly knives right now but someone could come along at any time. I was sure to build a fire under him to tell him how many of us are out here looking for something new and different, so that if anything did come his way, he would be sure to grab onto it for us. Yeah, I have one of those...... and mine is also pretty well beaten.

Surgical steel, made in Japan, chromed latch, Ninja and face, the whole nine yards.

All in all it's got a nice feel to it. I like the deeply chamfered holes in the handles, and the way the edges of the handles are rounded off........ very comfortable.

The blade is a bit thin (like the 42) and that throws the balance off slightly with the heavier handles.

It's a shame you can't get them anymore.

I noticed the balance being off also. Sounds like you may have searched for these also. Sounds like you haven't had any luck finding any? If I do I will be sure to pick up a few and spread the wealth.

I have a AWMA, Inc. Bali. It was my first Bali and first knife I ever bought. Got it when I was 16 or 17 from a local knife shop. It was also the biggest one they had. Mine has a dragon etched in the blade.

Asian world is in downtown Philly and use to sell tons of good quality Japanese butterflys-but that was back in the early eighties when they were available.
They had Taylor-Seto,Compass,Parker,Valor,etc. I remember once stoping in there and they were selling some "slow movers" on sale-Compass 1200-Cho No Shi with the heavy brass handles and micarta grips(black or maroon) were selling for 29 bucks.I consider that one of the finest imports around.
In any event that is ancient history and what they have now is the same as everyone else.

John, there were a few companies back in the 80's that imported quality balis that were made in Japan. Taylor, Valor, Parker Cutlery Co, and yes, even Frost Cutlery used to have good quality balis made in Japan.
I wish I had bought more of them back when I had the chance. As it is, I sold about 14 of them when I first got married. (Kick myself everytime I think of it too!)
