This is a bad scan but you get the "picture." Outside Magazine, March 2008 issue. Underground Rappel. New Zealand. Shown is the last 80 ft of a 330 ft rappel into the 2.3 mile long Lost World on New Zealand's North Island. Shown is guide Johnny Taite. I GOTTA go there someday!!!!

Sweet Jesus. Is that a turd I see falling from his pants..

That's insane and looks like a blast. Beautiful pic.

that does look like a hell of an experience. we should organize the next WSS meet there.

Yeah, well, magnum, you live right in NJ and gotta prove to us you can get yer butt up to CT first before we talk about NZ. ;) :D

That is sweet:eek: There are so many places I need to go see in my life and that’s one of them. Amazing:thumbup:

I lived for a year in New Zealand and I've been to the Waitomo Caves where that picture was taken. I didn't do the huge abseil, but I did an awesome "wet" cave tour. we abseiled down a 20 meter waterfall, crawled up to our necks in water through low passages and got to see glow worms! Incredible! Unfortunately no cameras allowed. You could buy their shots but I thought $30 for a 5x7 a little steep! Hard to believe it's only 5 weeks since I left NZ. . .I wish i was back there right now!

Have you guys all seen the Planet Earth dvd series from the BBC?

It features a lot of stuff like this, guys base jumping into drops like that, wildlife inside, etc. Pretty amazing.

I get that magazine, and really liked that photo. Long decent, looks like a blast. Would really have to trust your equipment! I love fast roping, and rappeling, esp aussie style.

THOSE GUYS ARE CRAZY!!!!!! You know how heavy their back packs must be with all that rope.

I like to pack ultralight, so I would base jump that baby!!! :)

... I would base jump that baby!!! :)

Dunno about that. The opening's not very wide, and doesn't tolerate much lateral drift. Further, the turbulence in holes like that can be pretty strong. You could potentially slide into a wall side.

The only really tough part about that rappel was humpin' the rope up to the drop point. You can't really recognize me in the photo. Nice pic, right?
-Thanks guys
:p
