Does anyone have a photo of a good design of a Kydex Sheath for a Fiskars/Gerber axe? A buddy of mine asked if I could make a better sheath for his ax, and I am looking for ideas. Thanks

Quite a vote of confidence! I don't think I will make more than one, unless it comes out exceptionally well. I have only made one sheath- for a Breeden PSK2, but it turned out great. It was a fun project. If I come up with something cool for the axe, I will post the results.

For anyone who has not tried molding Kydex yet- I would encourage it. I spent a lot more time thinking about it than it actually took to make the sheath. It was pretty easy.

I've made one out of leather for a CS Trailhawk; haven't used Kydex yet.

You could also ask this question in the Sheaths & Such forum. I don't think I've seen many of those fellows in W&SS.

Kevin Estela had a little kydex slip cover for the Fiskars, but I can't seem to find the pic. Maybe he will chime in.

I'm trying to talk Kiahs into making a head cover once he gets all his stuff settled.

That retention flap is a cool idea, and the color makes alot of sense. Last night, I started two ideas, one that folds over the blade edge, and one that folds over the top. The top fold could still incorporate some of Kevin Estela's design. That is exactly was I was after. Thanks!

very cool thats what kinda pic idea i needed now i should be able to fashion a kydex sheath for my saw21c .. great thread thx:thumbup:

The pic above is probably the best style for an axe but here's what I did for my hatchet.

Has a Molle-lok on it so I can mount it to my pack.

I finished the sheath last night. I had the Dremel wander on me while I was sanding the edge, but other than that I am happy with the way it turned out. The sheath holds great, almost too great. I may have to remove more material to get it to release easier. Anyway, here is my take on that Sharpshooter design with the thumb release.

That is great. I have been trying to figure out how to make a good kydex sheath for a axe or hatchet. Nice work.

Can't believe that Estela did'nt hook us up here with the Fiskers/Gerber hatchet Kydex cover?! What up Kev?! Don't hold out, get us some WSS Orange Kydex covers for our hatchets found....

Update- Friend loved the Kydex sheath. We departed Sat morning for 3 days on the Buffalo River in AR. The edge held amazingly well. Second day of the river trip, around dusk, friend forgets to remove sheath before chopping. I hear a funny thud...a sigh..and a,"..uh, ...Bill....."

Needless to say, the axe survived, the sheath did not.

Lesson learned- Form fitted black Kydex belongs in the hands of those who pay attention. Actually, I think the same can be said for all sharp edged tools. Next time, orange Kydex with reflective tape.
