Ax with tabs?

Just went snowshoeing, and found an old axe hanging in a tree. Looks like it's been there a while. The head is fairly standard, but the blade is worn down quite a bit. The back of the head is somewhat flattened, looks like it was used to drive a wedge maybe.

Where the handle fits into the head, the axe head has triangular tabs that extend about 3/4 of an an inch down the handle itself. I've seen a lot of old axes, but never on with these tabs. I don't think it's anything special, just curious if anyone else has seen this? Thanks!

I think the angular tabs like that are common to something like the Jersey pattern (check out the Council Tool Jersey Axe).

Quite a few axe patterns have those tabs. Most Swedish style axes have those tabs, however those tend to be rounded.

The purpose is to give more contact area between the eye and the handle to make it a stronger connection.
