Is it worth restoring an axe that has been in a fire?
I have what I believe is a Sager Chemical single bit that looks as if it's been in a fire. I don't need this to look like new. Just curious as to how much time I should put into it, if any. To make it a functioning axe again.
I don't have photos just yet. I just figured out this morning who the manufacturer was.
The axe was in very good condition before the fire.

Well, if you have/know a guy that has ankiln and or tempering oven it should be easy peasy. Otherwise you could send it off to a heat treating company and if anyone here has Rockwell testing files we can tell you what it needs to be tempered to

I did lightly push a file across the blade. It seems hard. Although I did not file away too much of the rusty scale.
As stated I only just determined it's a Sager. So up till this point I have not done much more than clean the axe with a wire wheel and oil.

If it's otherwise in good shape, a new heat treat is not hard.

It's likely something you could do yourself if you can access a good heat source.

Give it a good filing. And compare it to some other axes. Then you'll know.

lots of axe's out there... just saying. If a gift from family then proceed... if
caught "in the wild" .... and, fails the file test...move on.

take a wire wheel and some care to remove the rust, no need to soak sand the whole thing shiny ( If there's a thick hard rust some fine sandpaper will remove it without looking like it was sanded )
If there's a thick hard scale rust it can deceive you in your file test.

It's very hard to see but in the first photo I can just see the letters ...MIC...
they are kinda at slant.
I guess I need to compare it to some other logos
