Axe/ Hammer Question

I recently bought an antique miners hammer and wanted to turn it into a battle hammer. Just one quick question- is either Cocobolo or Lignum vitae suitable for handle material (keeping the grain flowing up the handle) or are they too brittle- I probably:D won't use it as a battle hammer but I may want to try it out one day. Or should I just stick to hickory? Or other choices that you may suggest.

Thanks in advance

Either wood should be fine as long as you keep the grain going lengthwise.

For warhammers and axes that will see use as such, I would highly recommend hickory or ash. However, if you were to weld/rivet langets to the head, not just the shaft, just about any wood can be used succesfully.

It'd look awesome with Osage Orange.
