Axe head heat treat

I have an old Fulton axe head I'm making into a camping axe for my son. How do i heat treat it. I planned on heat treating it as though it was 1095. Heat to non magnetic and quench in 120 degree canola oil. Then temper at 450 for 2 hours.

I would do an interrupted edge quench. Make sure you have a good amount of oil as it will heat up quickly with a piece as large as an axe.

It's likely something like 1070-1080 carbon steel . Normalize it. Austinize around 1475. Your warm conola would be fine. I'd advise walking your temper up. Start around 400 and increase as needed.

I bought a small hatchet and it stated it was made of 1050 FYI.
