Here's what I settled on. I had some scrap pieces of 1/4" x 1-1/5" poplar left over from making radiator covers. Strong but flexible. Worked like a champ on this old China steel head (soon to be seen in the What Did You Hang Today thread). I can trim them to fit most any eye size going forward. Thanks for all the recommendations.

They're designed to tighten this way, with the shape of your hand, otherwise you're squeezing them upside down.

I think he means just so the bulk of the clamps will be out of your way. I use em upside down for this reason too.
