Well, I found these at an antique shop while looking for straight razors, I look at the axe forum a little bit, but I don't know much.

New Pictures on Page 2 of cleaned up of the 2 kelly perfects cleaned up

but anyways, I found these, what do y'all think?

first one I can't make out the manufacture, any ideas?

this last one says 1 1/4 China, I couldn't tell what it said until I got home and cleaned off the dirt, I don't expect this one to be a good one, but I don't know, I may be proven wrong.

anyways, I figured they were worth a gamble, the true temper kellys were $4 each and the 2 smaller ones were $3 each.

Anyways, they were cleaned very little, just a damp rag and wiped down a bit. What is my best bet for cleaning these off?
and can they be salvaged? I have files that I can use for sharpening as well as a work sharp, will a worksharp work well for sharpening these? I have sharpened a cheap (new home depot brand) axe with it and it turned out well enough.

thanks for all y'alls help

well I guess the first was a good score then for 3 bucks

the handle on it now is from the single bit, my pocket knife, and 2 nice blisters on my thumb lol
I just need to get a wedge put in it.

the donor handle was bent in the middle, probably about 15 degrees or so

Great score! Two Kelly Perfects and a Belknap. You've been living right. :encouragement:

do you think that the double bit is salvageable?
it has a few edge chips in it if you can see them, they aren't too deep, but deep enough for me to wonder.

Now I just have to find handles for them and start learning....crap, another thing too collect. there went more money lol

oh, and something funny on the state of one

the 1 1/4 china one was on a handle that was probably 3 ft long. It seemed pretty ridiculous to me.

also, I think that I will do a vinegar soak on these when i get home, try to get the rust off of them

Oh, I have another question, will CLR harm the axes for getting rust off?

I know I have CLR at my house, but I don't know about vinegar.
thanks

Can anyone point me in the right direction for finding a good how to thread for rehafting and sharpening?

I don't know enough about it to just jump in. I'm liable to pick a grain on a haft 90 degrees from what in need if I can't get the info. I also don't know what I am doing on sharpening. I have used a file on an axe, a hand held work sharp (worked well on a cheap axe, dont know if it is a bad Idea to use them), and even a high speed bench grinder on some cheap hatchets

I can manage to clean the rust off on my own, I have found plenty of threads on that, just not on the others

Thanks in advance

I just cleaned up this old axe that had been sitting out in the shed. I had never previously noticed that it was marked "Sentry USA"
I'm assuming that this was for sentry hardware.........any idea who manufactured for them?

I don't know anything about Sentry but I know that you have a fine looking axe. I love that wide straight bit. Looks really fresh - very little wear.

That sentry looks nice

I just got done soaking the 2 jelly perfects that i found, I will post pictures when I get on my computer next. They are looking good.

I sharpened up the double bit ad both are now on handles. I used my work harp to sharpen it, but was very careful not not to get the blade hot. I haven't used it yet though

We aren't fans of Chinese axes here, but I have to admit that head is a very cool shape.

I know lol, I'm not a fan of chinese axes either. I couldn't read it and took a gamble (3$ gamble is worth it regardless where it is made in my opinion) on the shape. I think the blade almost looks like a hawk, but the eye slid shaped almost exactly like my hatchets (speaking of which, I need to pick up a decent one). I will mount it anyways, who knows, it may end up being a decent little beater that I don't have to worry about, and it really light.

And here is a link to the double bit, sorry, I can't do better on my phone

I didn't strip all the rust away and you can see some in the picture. It is a user axe and will be used by more than just me. So it won't be taken care of as well as it should.......so I didn't put as much into it. But hey, it's sharpened up now and ready to use

the Chinese bit could turn out to be pretty good, sometimes they are really hard steel.

all good
the Bluegrass is a nice find

buzz

I will be mounting the Chinese head whenever I get around to it, I'm gonna be taking the 2 Kelly perfects out today or tomorrow. I will update on everything when I get the chance. I will also be sharpening the bluegrass tonight or tomorrow, were they supposed to
Have a straight edge or curved?

curved. they (the bits) look to still have the proper 'curve'. i would try to stick with those, keeping them even.
