Axe ID/info thread

Why thank you

I have been getting tired f driving 30 min to the range and I figure it will give me something to do for a few weeks after work every day. I'd use a scythe instead of the weed eater (I've been reason the scythe thread), but I don't have one....I'm keeping a look out though, maybe I'll get lucky

Well, I figure that I should just keep posting my finds here, rather making new threads

It will help me keep track of them all

Anyways, the flea market was good to me today

I saw probably 5 broad axes at 65 give or take so I avoided them, but I did get some good finds

I came home with 2 double bits at 10 each, one haft is good on them

A military issue machete which will be cleaned up and put to good use, and a 55# mustang brand recurve bow that is from the 60s or 70s

And a big file that is still pretty sharp ( I think, it grabs good).

I will post pictures later on tonight

Now then, there are no makers marks on the double bits, but I believe hey are pretty old. At Least 30 years of the seller is to be believed. One is marked with an X and the other is marked with a 3^2 like the plumb weight, but there is no plumb mark like I have seen before. It is a full size double bit, so I don't know what brand it is. It also has a ribbed eye

Cool. Looking forward to seeing your recent finds, crazy e. The one with ribs in the eye is probably a Kelly. At least it seems to be the general consensus that Kelly was pretty much the only manufacturer putting in the ribs.

Now you have a pistol/bow range! Perfect.

The most effective way that I've found to judge a used file is to hold it facing the flat into the sun (or light) and turn it back and forth to see if there are reflections coming off the teeth. If they are flattened (dull) light will reflect of the tips of the teeth. I generally don't bother on files if they aren't stamped a good brand like Simonds, Nicholson, Heller, etc and I've been hearing aweome things about pferd.

Ya, the range isn't done yet, still working on it

The file is made in the US

I will have pictures up today sometime

Here are the pictures

The 2 axes and the file. the one with less rust doesn't need a new handle, the other does. (I paid 2.50 for the file and 10 each for the axes)

only mark on this one is the X so far, though that may change when I clean it up better

here is the one with the ribbed eye and the mark 3^2
I cleaned it up some with a brass wire cup brush on a drill, but there still may be another makers mark that I haven't exposed.

Here is the machete, it is by far the thickest machete that I have ever held, though I haven't held a lot. It feels like a cross between a big chopper and a machete (I paid 40 for it, most I've ever paid for anything like it).

And here is the bow, i'm happy with it, haven't had time to shoot it yet though. It pulls at 55# and has less stack than I have ever seen.

If anyone can provide more information on any of them it would be much appreciated, I'm always interested in ages of the items (particularly the machete and the ribbed eye).

I have decided to try to collect the kelly perfect line (all axe models, hammers, hachets, etc...) so I will probably end up trading these axes off unless I do have a kelly.

thanks for any info provided and good luck on everyone elses search

I've been thinking about what I am gonna do with the 2 axes (polish, satin, take off the rust only). I think I may use the double bit marked with X to try something I have been thinking about

I'll take all the rust off like I normally do (brass brush, vinegar, scotch rite after). Then ask my boss if I can use the glass bead blaster at work and blast it for a bead blasted finish. Then use a bluing agent on it and mount it on a dark stained haft.

What does everyone think about blasting it?

Well, I've been working on the double bit with the X on it, so far I have revealed part of a makers mark (this is not the one with the ribbed eye).

I have worked out

_________ cutter

Kelly axe and tool works

Any ideas?

Nope

That's what I thought at first, but it is definately a C instead of a K

And has Kelly axe and tool works on it

I've got it soaking in vinegar now, I will brush it after work and see if I can make more out

Well after a good amount of googling, I have figured out what the double bit is.

It is a swift cutter by Kelly axe and tool works. Has anyone heard of the model?

I found an eBay listing for one and compared the stamps in the pictures

The only word I couldn't make out on mine is swift

I will post some good pictures of the stamp and a couple other heads that I worked on today
